I am using Plexamp on my phone (Samsung 10, Android) to cast FLAC 5.1 audio-only files to a Chromecast attached directly to my AV Receiver. When I do this, Plex dashboard shows its detected as a Local stream, but maxes out at 2Mbps, and starts transcoding to Opus.
I have adjusted the settings in both the Plex app and Plexamp apps to max quality for both wi-fi and cellular connections, and I believe I have the PMS settings correct, so I’m just a bit baffled as to why this condition exists. I’ve attached a screenshot of the Plex dashboard while the file is playing, and also attached logs downloaded shortly after. Any diagnosis/guidance as to how to get higher streaming bandwidth to local devices would be appreciated. Thank you!
I don’t think Chromecast supports multichannel FLAC … so plex/plexamp converts to multichannel Opus (seems consistent with the dashboard showing ~ 2 mbps)
Seems that may be the case… I see that Chromecast supports ‘FLAC’ and ‘multichannel’ output, but there is no specific mention of ‘FLAC multichannel’ output.
What was/is throwing me off a bit is that when the file starts playing, the dashboard initially shows FLAC-Direct Play for the first 10-15 seconds of the track, and then switches to Opus. So, I was thinking that the bandwidth was limiting the Direct Play, and thus causing the switch to Opus.
Doing more research, it looks like a Dune will accomplish what I am after, so I’ll start looking that direction.
Thanks!!
