Server Version#: latest beta
Player Version#: latest Beta Android and Roku
Need help on fixing these problems and as it says in the subject I’m a long time Plex user and thinking about switching to a different server software that gives you more control. Hoping there’s some easy fixes.
First issue,
Transcoding h.265 generally due to needing subtitles will cause live TV to buffer. Doesn’t matter the GPU I have a 1070 and a 3080. Also even if the live TV is direct stream or direct play it still causes it to buffer which makes no sense. CPU doesn’t Spike at all
Second issue,
If a Roku user is transcoding a live TV stream and then a Android User tries to watch the same TV stream usually it will not work or it will cause stability issues. This is Amplified if there’s multiple users
Third problem,
When having the library automatically update when new content is added this can also cause live TV to buffer. This is random and I haven’t found a Rhyme or Reason for it.
These issues have been going on for months, maybe a year. Really need an option to disable Channel duplication, Almost 100% sure that would fix the second issue. I’ve been told in the past it’s a timing issue or something to that effect. I have 15 tuners let me use them;).
Finally which is a security concern is if you have a client device on a Wi-Fi that’s not your own and then another device downloads the Plex app it’s greeted with your server information as somehow it gets for credentials from the device on the same Wi-Fi. Example I signed into a Roku at a friend’s house and while I was there he was able to sign into all his other TVs by just downloading the app, without me actually getting a pin from him and adding it to my server. He was just greeted with a sign in screen with my account info and just had to pick a user.
PS, still no favorite channels in guide but that’s the least important thing out of these three things. I can just keep scrolling if it gets out of my recent channels;)
Okay so it’s actually based off of the Roku itself, he can’t sign into any other devices other than Roku? It just caught me off-guard and was kind of odd. I’m not familiar with Roku as I haven’t signed into many in a long time. I’ve had my roku’s for quite a while.
From your descriptions, I almost wonder if this is disk I/O related. The problems seem to manifest during times when your disk would be seeing a (presumably) decent amount of simultaneous reads and writes (transcoding, updating metadata, etc…).
What’s your storage situation like? Is your transcoder temporary directory on the same disk as your Plex data directory (which would be its default location)? Are they located on a mechanical disk? You’re not doing anything weird like storing your Plex data (or transcoder temp directory) on a network share, right?
Great thought. My operating system and transcoding is on a Samsung m. 2 NVME 1tb and my Plex metadata and backup data is on its own M. 2 Nvme 500 gig Western Digital black. I thought something similar to that , so I bought two new hard drives.
Could be off the mark here but if you server is running windows could AV or Defender be scanning your files as they are being written to disk causing a bottleneck ?
I don’t see any kind of Spike from Windows that would cause that but I can disable them and see if I have any change. I appreciate the input! What’s odd is it only causes Interruption to live TV, doesn’t cause any issues to watching movies.
If a Plex Employee does decide to look at this you can close the topic. I’m not worried about your security flaw or ongoing problems that are getting ignored. Someone was able to gain access to my server a couple nights ago from a friend’s account. So I’ve decided to leave Plex. If Plex employees don’t care why should I. Good luck!
