Ruku Android TV Timing problem Live tv Ongoing almost a Year!

Server Version#: Lastest beta
Player Version#: Lastest beta

Ongoing for almost a year now. Been told it’s a timing problem.

If a Roku user is transcoding a live TV stream and then a Android User tries to watch the same TV stream usually it will not work or it will cause stability issues. Will either buffer, start in the wrong time and not let you fast-forward or not load the channel at all… This is Amplified if there’s multiple users on.

Easy fix for now would be to have an option to disable Channel duplication.

Been Shrugged off by two Plex employees already! Been told this may be fixed once live TV pausing is fixed on Android TV but that hasn’t happened yet either.

I just tested this with a Roku 4 and Android One+8 Running Android 11, ABC HD Channel it loaded fine on both devices and had no issues with buffering or starting at the wrong time. I had the Roku (second floor on Wi-Fi) started before I started the One+8 and the phone was actually ahead of the Roku on the live stream by about 2-3 seconds, but pausing either device didn’t effect the others stream at all.

My first thought is how many tuners are you using? The only reason I ask is I currently have 6 total tuners (one HD HomeRun Quattro and one HD HomeRun Extend) one has 4 tuners and the other 2.
I did this just for the reason My mother likes to record her shows and watch live tv and with 2 kids at college I didn’t want someone running into a streaming issue with live tv if they wanted to use it when she was using 2 of the tuners.

Was your Roku device transcoding by chance or direct stream? I have five hdhomerun Primes, two connects and one 4K connect so tuners is definitely not a problem . I appreciate the reply!

This doesn’t happen when there’s just basic Channel watching generally. But example if there’s a football game or a capitol being stormed and everyone’s watching the same channel this is when this occurs. So Saturday there was 5 Roku devices and two Nvidia Shield’s trying to watch the same channel and it was a no-go. Ultimately had to switch the Nvidia Shields over to emby. This is why my thought process would be have an option to disable Channel duplication. I have the tuners let me use them if there’s an issue with having so many people watch the same channel. Been having this issue for I think a year or over a year now, I’ve been patient enough.

Bump.

If you’d be so kind to at least respond and let me know if possibly disabling transcoding would fix this issue. Changing out my 10 Roku TVs to Android is not an option. And Roku seems to run better when they transcode live TV. Or when the other employees were referencing a timing issue that only has to do with Channel duplication?

I am having the same issue. If a Roku (Roku TV or Roku Streaming stick +) is playing a live channel an android device or fire tv stick is unable to watch the same channel. I am running a single HDHomerun prime. Error displayed is “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”

Doesn’t matter which channel and doesn’t matter which device initiated the channel. So long as a Roku has tuned in any android tuning in after gets the error. If no roku is currently watching then any android is free to watch. I have experienced this with 2 separate servers.

As a last-ditch effort I disabled the transcoder on Plex to see if that makes a difference, still testing. Clearly Plex does not want to fix this issue. As it’s been ignored for over a year now or they’re clear lack of response. Also testing out Team Green. They don’t have that problem;).

Didn’t work it’s a channel duplication problem. So I left Plex and went to emby, no issues. Tired of being ignored.

So I tried an older version of the app before they forced the use of the new player on android and the video will play with the old player. It does however seem to force closed captioning and transcode the video though.

It seems the problem is either with closed captioning or just the new player on androids handling of it while sharing with a Roku.

That’s interesting that you bring that up. It could be a player issue as it did start about a year ago when the new player was introduced. I’m on emby now and I don’t have any issues. But I finally found a Plex employee willing to help so just waiting to see what his thoughts are.

Just an update , I think he’s working on the TV Guide being able to take multiple sources so I don’t know how much he can help but maybe he can convince someone to actually fix it if he can duplicate the issue. I sent logs yesterday. If you guys can also reproduce with logs that would be great!

I’ve noticed the one thing we all have in common is the hdhomerun Prime which might be the only way to reproduce this. For what it’s worth I use it with Comcast and everything is delivered in h.264.

I’ll see if I can get some logs later, who should I DM them to?

@Sp1, @bkisom137 or anyone with this issue please send logs to @cire12. Just had to confirm with him it was okay. Last employee I had multiple people sent logs to with this problem I never heard back from haha.

Just an update guys I haven’t heard anything back so the only thing I can recommend is separating the tuners, if you have multiple HD home runs. This actually has worked for me as it doesn’t allow Android users and Roku users to use the same tuners to channel duplicate. If I hear anything I’ll let you guys know. If interested just let me know and I will walk you through the steps of doing this.

I sent some logs but in the meantime I’ve been using the android live channels app on my TiVo stream to watch live TV.

Yep that’s a solution as well. Works well. The only problem I ran into with that is if a Roku user tries to access the same tuner they’ll get an error;).

Elan the CEO has sent it to engineering so hopefully we get a resolution!! Splitting the tuners doesn’t work, it causes stability issues.
