I’m looking for a suggestion on for a Plex player for an older LG TV that has a Plex player called MediaLink which seems to have been abandoned a while ago – my main issue is that it does not play a fair number of files – I presume because of new formats that it does not support. Secondary issues are an inability to choose audio tracks (sometimes English is not the default) and I’d also like to have access to podcasts now that it is a feature on Plex.
I’m willing to buy a Roku or something similar if that will solve the problem. I was also looking at Pi or some other minimalistic computer or even repurposing a not currently in use desktop.
Considered RasPlex – getting conflicting posts if it is still in development. A Windows machine would be clunky – I use OpenPHT as my main player and a browser for podcasts but would prefer one player for both. Haven’t used it much but the Plex Android app seems to do everything I want but would mean figuring out a way to run Android on a Pi-like device which seems possible based on a quick search. No experience with the Android Plex App though.
Anyway, figure it was too many branches to go down so I figured I’d ask for advice – any suggestions?
All players have their ups & downs. I use a Roku3 and sometimes Android but it’s all up to you AND what media you will stream(this needs to be known before any decisions are made).
Tell us what type of media you have(avi, mp4, mkv, 480p, 4K, etc…) These factors are important on the best player for you.
Couldnt agree more with NewPlaza all depends on the media you play on what player would suit you best.
I have a fleet of Raspberry Pi’s, Pi A, Pi2 & Pi3 all running Rasplex as its a debian base and just works (had well over 120 days uptime with no issues), i wouldn’t hold your breath on getting android running on a pi as from day 1 there has always been some sort of problem and its just not stable compared to libreelec & rasplex, I am currently looking into Emteria (android) for the Pi but i dont have high hopes of it working 100% and will expect some sort of problem.
Rasplex-OpenPHT isnt in development afaik as it used to receive semi regular updates but nothing has been updated since 2017 so i think its coming to an end but for a stable standalone player its really good but it doesn’t do podcasts (checked the model A) i will check the Pi3 and post back if it does in case its hidden in a menu somewhere as i usually disable them.
