Looking for latest info on upgrading Synology DS220+ to DSM 7 with Plex already installed

Server Version#:DS220+
Player Version#: 1.29.2.6364-6000
I tried searching (please don’t shout at me) but cannot seem to find what I am looking for. I am considering upgrading my Synology DS220+ to DSM 7 (currently DSM 6.2.4-25556 update 5). I am running plex media server on it at the moment.
I know there was initially a warning not to upgrade, but I believe it is now safe to do so. I just wondered if there was a latest up to date guide to installing DSM 7 and keeping Plex working.
For example I cannot find which package of Plex I need to download for the DS220+ running DSM 7, not sure if I have intel 32/64 or armv7/v8 etc, it says on info centre that I have Intel celeronJ4025, so assume I need the intel 32bit or 64bit, but which one? Also don’t want to lose all my movies/music I have at present. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Very simple but indeed detail rich process.

The most important parts:

  1. Uninstall PMS BEFORE you upgrade to DSM 7
  2. Never install Package Center DSM 7’s BETA Plex app (we’re trying to get that updated… for what seems like forever ) Download from Plex.tv and use the SPK manually.

Here is the process, complete with screenshots.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions as there’s a lot of details.

Thank you, it says something about if Plex is installed on the same folder, here is a screen shot of my current install, does this look like the same folder? (Hope the image is attached)

basically all my files (movies/music etc) are listed under ds220share, Plex is listed further down, but not in the ds220 share folder, they are all under the bold DS220. Will I need to do something different?

I think this shows I only have 1 volume and they are all installed on that 1 volume, am I correct?

You are correct. Use Scenario 2.

Yes, Everything is on Volume 1

To summarize what the changes are:

  1. We had to abandon the “Plex” shared folder. When this is done, you can use it as you deem appropriate. The new shared folder PMS uses (Don’t put any media there) is “PlexMediaServer”. I set it up this way so you can easily make backups of your server using HyperBackup (which works flawlessly, btw)

  2. We also had to abandon username “Plex”. The new SystemInternalUsername you grant permission to is “PlexMediaServer”. You can delete “Plex” at your leisure.
“PlexMediaServer” is now a ‘system service’ application (part of the architecture changed in DSM 7)

When you install the DSM 7 Plex app. It ( I, actually ), will bug you to make certain ALL the permissions are set perfectly in the Plex shared folder so that PlexMediaServer can get to everything.

The only critical point is where you’re setting permissions and must “Apply to this folder, sub folder, and files”. If you get that, you’re golden.

The installer now has menu options. For this first installation, You’ll want a “Normal” installation.

When all the permissions are right, It will sit there (seemingly ‘hung’) for a while.

This is normal. What’s happening is that it’s moving all your metadata from the Plex shared folder to its new home in PlexMediaServer.

Please don’t interrupt it.

You can open a new tab to the Syno and monitor its progress –

  • In the Plex shared folder
  • “Migration.log” will contain the current status. It takes about a minute to show up initially.

All that having been said,

Yes, Use Scenario 2.

oops: sorry, I see FordGuy already got in while I was writing this novella

Damn, I had other issues and went ahead with the upgrade to DSM 7 BEFORE I uninstalled PMS, what do I need to do now, sorry, was more concerned with sorting my other issue out and completely forgot about step one in this!

Please say I’m not screwed

Hey,

It doesn’t look like I am screwed, After the first update to DSM 7, I immediately uninstalled, Plex. Then did the 2 further updates to DSM. Then followed your guide and so far, everything seems to be working. I had to rescan all the files, but at least they were all still there. So thank you all for your help, as I say, fingers crossed, it seems OK. Plex rocks and so does this support group

Did you have to create a new server or did everything from the Plex shared folder move over ?

The comment you deleted was because you accidentally grabbed the DSM 6 package from the downloads page.

I’m not sure. When I logged onto plex it said I had 2 servers of the same name (both DS220) but one was not accessible so I choose the one it could see, I then had to add the folders Movies, TV Shows, Music & Pictures, point the relevant folders to where they were on the NAS drive and just let them go ahead and rescan, so I guess I had to create a new server?

And yes, you spotted my deliberate error, I downloaded the DSM 6 package by mistake

But either way, I’m up and running on the more secure DSM 7, and have full access to all my movies/music etc via plex, so I am very happy. A little stressful, but you guys made it so much less stressful over all, so thank you again.
