Is upgrading to DSM 7 still a problem for Plex in 2023?

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6486
Player Version#:

I have been holding off on upgrading my Synology DS918+ from DSM 6 to DSM 7 because of the migration issues I was reading about.

I have finally decided to make the upgrade and I’m having a hard time finding recent instructions on how to upgrade to DSM 7 without breaking my Plex installation. Everything I’m finding looks to be at least a year or two old.

Can anyone point me to a current guide on how to do this in 2023?

I’m in the same boat. Very hesitant to risk the Plex server after so much work.

the current guide is still what chuck posted which is accurate. isn’t hasn’t been updated because there has been no need as it works fine.

item 26.

That’s the guide I was looking at. At the very top it says “THIS DOCUMENT IS OUT OF DATE and is being updated. Please ask for assistance in the forums.”

So that’s why I came here.

Straight from the :service_dog:

It’s out of date ONLY because you now get PMS 1.29.2 from Package Center.
The cumbersome first part of that document can be avoided.

Setting all the permissions in Plex share are still required as written.

I flagged it mid last week so I remember to update it.

Okay, I’ll try that out then. Thanks for the update!

I’ve just finished updating it.

Thank you for reminding me to get it down.

I still need to update a few screenshots but those are minor

So are these the steps I take:

  1. Upgrade to DSM 7.
  2. Download PMS directly from Plex.
  3. Install PMS manually
  4. Follow the steps in your guide:
    A. Install PMS
    B. Install fails
    C. Fix permissions
    D. Uninstall PMS
    E. Reinstall PMS

Does this sound right?

Best is:

  1. Uninstall Plex for DSM 6 (avoids DSM 7 package manager games)
  2. Upgrade to DSM 7
  3. Install PMS (for DSM 7) from Package Manager -OR- Plex.tv
  4. Follow the permissions as documented…

There’s a timing problem which is unavoidable.

  1. System Internal User ‘PlexMediaServer’ doesn’t exist until first attempt to install – which will fail due to permissions.

  2. After install fails the first time you can fix the permissions in the Plex share

  3. Uninstall + erase ( Having confirmed everything still in the Plex shared folder)

  4. Now install again

EDIT:

DSM 7 made us change both username and shared folder.

DSM 7 took away my ability to do this all automatically for you (which I gladly would have)

That’s how we got to where we are. :frowning:

Thank you for the details here. I will try that out now. I’ll report back when I’m done.

So I installed everything and have run into a problem. When I uninstalled the new version of Plex, I picked the option to keep files so I could re-install. When I reinstall, it doesn’t seem to do any migrating of files and when I log in to the server it appears to be a fresh server and it doesn’t show my media shares.

The screenshot shows the uninstall options. Am I using the wrong one?

Not a problem.

With all your DSM 6 server info still in the Plex shared folder …

Uninstall + ERASE (the red text)

This clears out that first failed DSM 7 install (from the timing/permissions issue)

Next installation will start.

When it’s working right, it will sit at Installing… until ALL the data is moved.

In a separate tab, open Plex/Migration.log. You can follow its progress there.

That did the trick!

The red type and “Not Recoverable” scared me off there!

Thanks for all the help today!
