Lost connection

Also posted over on reddit, so i apologize if you frequent both communities:

I am having an issue re-provisioning my server. I went to change the port in remote access to see if i was able to get less peering issues with port 443, this did not fix the issue so i went and changed it back to the default port. It was at this point i lost remote connection completely. I then went through the following steps thinking this was going to bring it back (I should mention this is on a remote vps hosted by nocix):

  1. stopped the server in system control
  2. logged into the server via the vnc interface
  3. started the server back up and tried to login with localhost:32400, what comes up is the web ui but no local server. Its the splash page saying install plex media server
  4. i go into setting authorized devices and remove the server
  5. restart it
  6. log back in with the localhost:32400 and the server is back up, i click claim, login to my Plex account and it spins adding it. I leave it and its not showing up on my plex.tv
  7. i try again and remove the device and try adding it again, still no server (“ Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results)

so overall tried to change the port, lost the server, moved it from my authorized devices, and able to log in locally but when i try to claim it i loose it again.

this has happened to me once before on another provider, and i ended up giving up trying to fix it and rebuilt the server from scratch. Which i don’t want to have to do again given i have almost 75tb of media and it takes days to rebuilt the libraries.

scoured the internet for solutions and i couldn’t figure it out. Any help would be great, please feel free to ask any other questions that could point me to a fix

May I see some log files please.

  1. Verify DEBUG logging on, VERBOSE is OFF.
  2. Restart PMS.
  3. Wait 60 seconds after restart
  4. Gather logs (either download or manual tar.gz)

My suspicion is that sudo chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver is needed.

PMS, for whatever reason, isn’t the owner of the directory tree and can’t write to the Preferences.xml file.

I have since deleted the instance and rebuilt the server.

Nothing had changed in terms of ownership, all that was done was a port was changed and the server was removed from the authorized user list.

If the problem still exists, may I see the logs ?

If not, then shall we mark this as resolved?
