Lyrics option unavailable in my music libraries

I have Plex pass and on Plexamp (iOS) and Plex web, the lyrics display option is not shown for me for my MP3 libraries which I ripped from my CD collection. None of any songs. However most album covers, artists bios, etc. do present.

I researched online which basically points to older Plex server version issue. But this is not it for me. I have Plex Media server 1.31.3.6868 (Windows) and Plexamp 4.10.1. I do have LyricFind enable and place it on top in Album setting, refreshed all Metadata many times (for months), but the show lyrics option either does not exist or is grayed out. Any tips would be appreciated.

This version is over a year old by now. Why that old?

Which Windows version? Windows 7 is no longer supported.

This is only of importance when using the old metadata agents. Which you should not do anymore – particularly when expecting the LyricFind option to work.

It’s on Windows Server 2012R2, and if upgrade Plex media server from 1.31 to newer version would resolve this, I could try. From online tips, the no lyrics issue was on 1.22 and people upgraded to 1.23 and it’s resolved. I use default Plex Media as default scanner. Thanks for the quick response!

I’m afraid there is no scanner by that name. (for audio libraries at least)
The name of the agent is much more important, anyway.

Ah, typo, thanks, I meant Plex Music, which is the new default. Not the legacy one.

If you edit the music library in Plex,
go to the Advanced tab,
is the checkbox ā€œFind Lyricsā€ ticked?

yes, it’s checked all along. And in addition to that, I recently followed online suggestion - under Setting, Agents, Albums, last.fm, I moved LyricFind to the top. (screenshot 2), but that does not do anything.

Everything under Settings - Agents is only for the old, deprecated agents.
The new agents are configured on the Advanced tab of each library independently.

Is your server behind a DNS based filter, like Pi-hole, privoxy etc.?
You could also try to use a generally known ā€œgoodā€ DNS server like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8

Ah, I see, so enable Find Lyrics under that music library is sufficient. Thanks. My router uses Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) and no special setting or proxy. In port forward I have 32400 points to that Win 21012R2 server. Although lyrics fetch is a read action from net so that should not matter.

I just checked Plex Media server version on that Win server and it’s ā€˜up to dated’ as 1.32. Unlike Win 10/11 has 1.40 now. So I guess that’s the last version for that Win server. Perhaps I could move Plex server to my Ubuntu Linux server however I don’t believe 1.32 is the issue. Another reason is all my music files are on that Win server and I don’t want to use Samba/SMB to bridge the access.

I’d try with a small test library anyway. See if you get lyrics on that server.
It’s only music files, so the bandwidth requirements are not that astronomical.

Correct.

@OttoKerner Appreciate the pointers, it’s likely the Plex media server version issue. Over the weekend I put 1.40 on a Mac mini, put an album in its music library, and sure enough those songs have lyrics. Looks like I need to migrate my entire music collections to a Win 10/11 or 2019/2022 server to run a new Plex media server. Not a desirable task but it’s time to do it. Thanks!

You can restore the plex data folder on the new machine.
If you can keep the drive letters/foldernames/filenames perfectly identical, you can convert the old library to the new agent, instead of creating one from scratch.
On the other hand, maybe this occasion is a welcome reason to make tabula rasa.

There could be another scenario about the issue. Just thinking out loud. The Win 2012R2 and Plex media server 1.31 have been running a few years before I upgraded to Plex Pass. Is it possible that 1.31 (settings somewhere) didn’t know? Of course at this point I should do new Win server instead of start from scratch with 1.31 on 2012R2.

PMS would regularly contact plex.tv to fetch changes like that. It would at least happen at every restart – unless you prevented it in your firewall.
