Mac app beachball crash starting any Live TV channel

Whenever I try to start any LIVE TV channel on the Plex Mac app - the app totally freezes and cursor turns to beachball indefinitely.

Beyond ridiculous we have been days now without a fix…

Version 1.47.1.3086-6c3d964f

You can reinstall Plex for Mac and to some extent be satisfied it is proper.
You would not only drag it to the trash, you’d delete the directories

  • /Users/osk3/Library/Application Support/Plex
  • /Users/osk3/Library/Caches/Plex
  • /Users/osk3/Library/Logs/Plex

Empty your trash. and then download a fresh copy of Plex for Mac and install it as usual.

If I understand you correctly, you have an over the air tuner.

  • We can test your tuner with another type of Plex player. On the Mac you would open the Plex Web App in Safari or Opera (or w/e) and try to play Live TV.

Does the problem occur using both the Plex for Mac app and within the Web App? Are you familiar with our usual mantra of grabbing logs?

Hi Nibbles,

Appreciate your reply.

I cleaned all of the listed directories as you mentioned and reinstalled the app (also done this several times previously using AppCleaner with no success).

There was no difference - as soon as I try to start any Live TV channel, the app totally crashes.

To confirm:

  • Yes I have over the air tuner.

  • I tested in all other Plex clients and they can at least play the stream without totally crashing (even though Plex is terrible at Live TV stability-wise).

It seems to be an isolated issue with the Mac app, if you check the forums others are having the same problem.

Do you need me to export logs from the Mac App? What are the steps for this?

okay good info on the other players working great!

To do Plex for Mac logging, start it up and go into Plex Settings and
enable debug logging

After saving changes, quit out Plex for Mac.
Then start Plex for Mac again, demonstrate the issue.
Try to Quit out of Plex for Mac (its probably a pinwheel)
If you can’t Quit, do a Force Quit.

Plex for Mac logs are stored in this sort of path:
/Users/osk3/Library/Logs/Plex

Grab the one with the most recent timestamp, zip and upload it.
Thanks bud

Thanks again Nibbles - please see attached log

Plex.1.log.zip (10.2 KB)

Good log, thanks.

I don’t have an understanding of the ERROR messages I see, though.
One message about a connection issue to the server stood out.
You can try to relax this security setting on Plex for Mac:

Mine is set to Never and just works.

Try On same network as server

Then SAVE CHANGES

restart Plex for Mac,
test again.

Thanks Nibbles
Set the dropdown > “On same network as server”

Still same result - total crash of app when starting any live channel.

Every other app working fine (within limits of plex - aka dropping after 5-10min regularly).

Honestly I am very close to just giving up on Plex altogether…

If I downgrade the app to Version 1.46.1.3056-ab91bdc0 via here

Then it works perfectly.

So I was right, this is a new bug introduced in latest version of the Mac Player.

PLEX DEVS PLEASE HELP

Typically there is no way to turn off the auto-update feature on the Mac app either, so it means that I now have to re-install this working version EVERY time I restart the app…

Fantastic stuff from the Plex devs, yet again /s

Edit: I found you can stop the auto-updater if you lock the app (right click > more info > lock). Screw you Plex devs, I win.

Still not fixed in latest update 1.48.2
This is really starting to get annoying now

Still not fixed in 1.49.1.3146-73559c78

Come on Plex, this is actually pathetic

Still not fixed in 1.50.1.3176-06a9352d

come on Plex… it’s been months now that we are unable to play live tv in Plex for Mac

I have long given up and moved to the old version / iOS app.
They clearly dont give a crap about Mac users - Its crazy how fast Plex went downhill…
