[edit]: I should add - if you’re doing the same thing, you can’t just erase and install onto the previous High Sierra partition.
The HS partition will be APFS-formatted. Even if you reformat this as HFS+ via the installer’s Disk Utility, it’ll still be an HFS+ partition within an APFS container. Install of Sierra will then fail with a flashing folder icon at boot.
You need to boot into the Sierra installer, then open the Terminal and manually remove the APFS container.
I can confirm that using Remote Buddy can serve as a workaround. It did restore function to the up/down keys. It is an awkward solution, however, requiring you to manually program the keys to match their normal function. Also the integration of Remote Buddy into the Harmony activities isn’t trivial.
I’m sure it can be improved once I learn more about operating Remote Buddy itself, but its definitely less appealing that the usual PLEX integration.
Followed this thread since I upgraded to High Sierra and the Up/Down on the remote stopped working. For a while I used a Bluetooth keyboard but after updating to 10.13.1 the remote function in macOS just disappeared and I downgraded to Sierra. Not an easy process but after it was done the remote works as it should and life is great again. Have been using Plex since 2009 and this was the first time I really had an issues I could not accept.
I’ve downgraded to High Sierra. I also couldn’t suffer the loss of remote functionality. Looking forward to the fix @hyperg0at has added making its way into the official release!

So, openPHT and Kodi have this fixed rather quickly and we are still waiting. It’s really the first time I’ve found that Plex is more or less unusable since I became a PlexPass holder. It can’t be very hard to fix it with the code that works for both OpenPHT and Kodi…
My solution for now has been to use Jump Desktop to control my Mac Mini remotely from my iPad or MBP. I used to have NAS for storage but now have a USB HDD connected directly to the Mac Mini which has improved performance a bit. Its not perfect but it works.
I had the same problem on my 2010 Mac Mini. Apple is very unlikely to resolve the issue since they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about when I tried explaining it to them. I did end up purchasing remote buddy and it is now working great. You do have to install the candelair plugin as well. It sucks I need to pay for something that worked on the last release but it’s better than going through the hassle of downgrading.
I had the same problem and I have been able to solve it with Better Touch Tool, programming the command and its keys, with the parallel keyboard activos.
I can use the Plex with Apple Remote again!
Excuse my English, but it’s translated by Google! :o
Better Touch Tool fixed the issue for me too. Thanks for the heads up! Shame I had to pay £4 instead of Plex just sorting the issue, but there you go.

I’m glad that I served you. I already had the utility before. It’is very useful on Mac and it reaches where Apple does not want to do it
Better Touch Tool is a solution. Works for me. You will need to remap all the functions on the apple remote. It does have a slight lag/latency though. Nice fix.
Thanks Aikhen.
