Plex for Synology Server Can Not Locate Any Network Devices via iMac 20,2

Server Version#: Version Version 1.41.8.9834
Player Version#: Version 4.146.0

Hi. This is an issue I’ve had for over a year now. I work on it when I have time and so far no resolution. I’m running the Plex server on a Synology NAS DS 1522+ with the latest server updates which is DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 3. Launching the Plex app directly from the Synology server and trying to add a library, Plex only sees files and folders on the Synology drives. It does not see a USB-C drive attached to the iMac I use to log into the Synolgy server and hence launch the Plex app. It also does not see the WDMYCLOUDMIRROR device that is connected directly to my router. All devices are discoverable by the Mac finder, can be mounted just fine and contents viewable. I have many other devices that the iMac can mount but Plex can’t see. The drag and drop the drive onto the file path window doesn’t work (obviously) either. No other drives are listed when browsing for the device to add to the library.

Reasoning: I moved files from the Synolgy drives to the WD drives to make more room. No sense in moving anymore files to other devices until I can get this sorted out.

Most threads I see mention Privacy issues yet Plex is not listed anywhere in my System Settings. I have completely uninstalled Plex using the "Erase All Of Plex Media Server’ setting.

I can list my WD settings if anyone wants to see them but what about external drive(s) connected directly to my iMac?

Is Synology blocking access? Is Mac OS blocking access? Is Plex blocking access?
I’m at total loss here. Either I’m dumb or need to go to networking school. lol

Thanks all. Much appreciated for any assistance.

Where is Plex Media Server running?

Your post mentions the Synology, but you tagged the thread with server-mac.

Assuming PMS is running on the Synology…

The Synology cannot automatically see folders on other computers (WD NAS, Mac, etc.).

The locations must first be shared by the computer where they exist using either NFS (Linux file sharing) or CIFS/SMB (Windows file sharing).

Once shared, they must be mounted on the Synology. Only then will there be a path that Plex can follow to access the files.

A quick Google search for “synology mount wd mycloud” turned up the following post on WD’s forum. It includes a video showing how to mount a remote folder on a Synology NAS.

Excellent feedback! Thank you so much. I never thought I’d get this resolved in such a short time.

PMS is running on the Synology NAS. See second sentence.

Usually what seems the biggest challenge is often a simple solution. I never knew the WD volume had to be mounted through the Synology NAS. I think the reason for this is because before I bought the Synology, I was using the WD drive to store and play my Plex media…however, my Plex server was running locally on my Mac. Therein lies the deception. I just figured it was plug and play like before not realizing wherever the PMS is running it can change the setup. Learning learning. And for what it’s worth, some of ya’ll can find solutions online so fast after I must have used every search combination for a year and never ran across that video. Well, that’s life I guess.

The only tweek I had to make was to change SMB on the WD to SMB 1 from SMB 2. Because I got a CIFS error when trying to add the volume. Quick search, quick fix.

Thanks again FrodGuy61. I’d buy ya a cold one if I could! Cheers!

Supplemental info for you.

DSM doesn’t have any support ‘Drag & Drop’ for accessing like MacOS does. ( DSM Linux vs Apple Unix differences)

You can export (share) folders from MacOS and then have the Syno perform a “Mount Remote Folder” (FileStation - Tools)

  1. Have MacOS ‘export’ the folder(s) as shared folders over NFS.

https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Enabling-network-NFS-shares-in-Mac-OS-X.html

  1. Have the Synology ‘Mount Remote Folder’ (NFS) into a local folder
(grant permission to ‘System Internal User’ PlexMediaServer to see it.)

It will take some tinkering but most important is granting Everyone READ permission from the Mac. ( PlexMediaServer is a system service now. it’s not a ‘user’ )
