Major Issues with plex loading any video outside of my own network

HI I have had plex running for a couple months now and it’s been working great, but within the last day or so things have gone totally downhill. For some reason, all the devices I try to stream from are buffering and eventually coming up with an error. I find it weird seeing that all these devices worked perfectly the other day but are now unusable. Does anyone have any ideas?

Would you mind sharing some more details on your setup?

  • remote access in general is working?
  • do you experience the same issue for different videos (e.g. 1080p vs 720p, h264 vs. MPEG2…)?
    • do the videos you Play require transcoding or do they play directly?
  • any changes to your network setup?
  • any new apps running on the server that could restrict performance available to Plex

It seems to be for all file types, none of my movies at varying quality’s want to load. It seems to only be a problem when you are remote connecting, I’ve checked that my server is available outside my network and it says it is. I’ve done a reset on most everything. I can watch everything just fine in my own home network where the server is connected.

Also I haven’t made any changes to my network in the last week so I don’t think that’s it.

how about the transcoding?
are your clients capable to play the videos in original quality or will they be transcoded/optimized? – you can see this when opening Plex in the browser while a video is playing… when you click on Activities > Now Playing (or the new dashboard), Plex will display if video/audio/… are direct played or modified (usually incl. some additional information).

If your server is struggling with a transcode but the client can deal with the original quality, please make sure to set the client’s playback quality to Original (or Maximum). This should avoid any not needed transcoding. Of course this will also depend on your internet uplink (upload) has sufficient bandwidth for original quality playback

So i have also tried to play on original quality and it just wont play. My upload speed is at 10MBps I know it’s not crazy fast but it was working just fine before.

I too have experienced the same set of issues since Saturday 1/12/19

Plex Server Version:1.14.15488

It does not matter whether a video is transcoding, direct playing, or direct streaming… Xbox, Roku, and PC have noticed increased buffering and h4 error responses. Prior to 1/12 no issue was to be had. CPU load stays below 15% and network up speed is 30mbps set for this cap. Video qualities on all devices are set also to stream up to original quality.

I cannot confirm this with my setup (tested w/ Plex 1.14.1 on Ubuntu 18.04 w/ remote playback on Plex for iOS).

Keeg, have you found anything that has helped improve your situation? I feel like I’ve spent so much time trying to figure out what’s going on.

So I found that my auto adjust quality setting had been turned off after the update, I turned it back on and it seems to be working now… I’m not sure why that made a difference because it wasn’t playing before even on the lowest quality. I’ll keep you updated.

I have not unfortunately, i was going to look into it later to determine if it was a Windows update that has been throttling me back. Glad to hear that auto adjust seems to have solved the issue for you though.

Okay so it helped but things are still pretty glitchy. Is there a way to look into whats happening when a stream fails. Like a log or something?
