makeMKV files sometimes not recognized by Plex

newbe but working hard to learn.

I use make MKV to copy my bluray library to plex to use the plex pass. I do the same thing everytime, mkv files all show up in the proper drive, proper folder (only used for bluray movies). But many times I get a message that the file isnt supported, and it wont play back. This doesnt seem to have a pattern, ie Dr Strange copied fine and CA Civil War didnt…both are marvel. I have tried using the suggested naming hints, but no matter what, many still say not supported.

I am way smart about doctor stuff, but not about computer tech. Many of the articles I have read here (MANY read) use terms I dont know.

Again, some seem fine, and it seemed like all these probs started getting worse about 3 weeks ago.

HTPC by Assasin, very high end, latest windows 10, makeMKV and Plex media player.

Help me Obi Wan, you’re our only hope>

Thanks

(1st post, sorry if its not in the right forum, but I follow directions well)

MakeMKV should be handling those videos just fine. Using it myself with no bigger issues. Personally I’d recommend not to let MakeMKV save the output file directly into your Plex folder… instead just store it in a temporary folder (could be your downloads folder, your desktop folder or any folder outside Plex).

Sometimes Plex gets a hiccup if the file it finds in its folder is still copying / being saved to the folder. Using a temporary folder will also give you the opportunity to double-check the file name matches Plex’ naming guide – poor naming is among the biggest causes for Plex not handling stuff right (or assigning your videos to the wrong movie).

At what exact point do you get a message saying something isn’t supported? Does this happened after you updated your library and try to play back the video?

If they are showing up in library, then not a naming thing. It may be an issue if analysis if it was read in before file was complete. (I would use a tmp folder like Tom80H suggests when making files.) You can try Analyzing the file again. from ellipsis menu on top right or preplay screen.

it gets saved into the E drive, the folder is “movies”, as far as I know the folder isnt specific to plex…I used to use kodi and never assigned either to the movie. in, but the only time I get the error is when I go to playback… ie if I click on it to “play” from the folder it does it well on most but I get the “file not supported”

OK, I JUST WENT TO THE HTPC AND THERE WAS A PLEX MEDIA PLAYER UPDATE, AND NOW EVERYTHING IS IN THE PLAYER…WTF???

Anyway, I wish I knew what was going on, but I dont. Thanks for now

I would also suggest using a temp folder to rip to. Not only does it give you a chance to get the name correct before moving it into place but it also gives you a chance to check the rip to ensure it is good (I typically check a few random points for A/V sync using mpv). Also occasionally it is easier to rip multiple titles than to figure out the correct one and then look at the results to see which one is the desired title (shorts, extras, and the like). Additionally, if you have your media server set to update on file change and you rip to directly in the library, the the server will be continually scanning while you are ripping.

Also, while you are ripping, the MKV file that MakeMKV creates is not actually valid (which is likely the cause of your problems). For one it is missing the track definitions until the rip is complete. It does this because MakeMKV has no way to know if a track is empty until it has gone through the whole thing (such as forced subtitles). Then, if a track ends up being empty, the track definition is not written to the MKV file.
