Managed plex account and sonos

When i am on my server account and in the plexamp i can see my sonos speaker and connect with it, when i’m on a managed user account i can not see my sonos speaker.

is it even possible to connect to the sonos speaker in the plexamp app on a managed user account?

Sorry, it is not. https://support.plex.tv/articles/control-sonos-playback-with-a-plex-app/#toc-1

Thanks for reply!

So, unawares of this issue, I purchased a few sonos speakers for my kids (managed users) this Christmas.

After some initial networking struggles to get everything set up and working I was able to cast to sonos both from my (owner, Plex-Pass) account and from plexamp under a managed home user.

However, this morning the access to cast from the managed user simply disappeared and will only work with the owner account selected (which I for obvious reasons do not want to leave logged in on my kids’ devices.

Furthermore, my wife has a separate account, but is an invited hoe user so the plex-pass should technically extend to her, but it is the same issue there, plexamp does not show the casting option, plex android app display an “:upgrade to plex-pass” message.

I can perhps understand the desire not to allow this feature for separate accounts for the desire of selling more plex-passes (personally) I would be completely willing to purchase a somewhat more expensive plex-family-pass for this, but not to have 6 separate plex-pass subscription, that’s ridiculous).

With the inherent limitations of managed users however, I don’t see any reason whatsoever as to why these should not be allowed to cast to sonos, And as I have personally experienced, there is absolutely nothing technical that prevents this (it was working yesterday).

Please fix this access problems for us!

per the link above, your wife should be able to link to the sonos account and get it working.

managed home users are a sub profile of the main account, and thus cannot be linked to other things.

you could setup unmanaged home accounts for your kids and then link the sonos to those accounts, should work same as your wifes, however there is no supported way to transfer any play histories from a managed home user to an unmanaged home user.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately hen using a full invited account, it does not work. The plex-account subscription is not recognized for the invited account, neither in plex.web, plex.android or plexamp. when attempting to cast to sonos.

I alwa was able to cast to sonos from a managed account, it was working yesterday when it was first set up, but this morning magically it was not and the managed accounts give the same error as the invited home accounts (“upgrade to plex-pass”).

It seems to me that there is a bug in the account subscription check on casting, and invited home users are not recognized as plex-pass and are therefore not allowed.

It even seems like managed users should work (under the owner account subscription) but the same plex-pass check is forbidding it, however I would be perfectly satisfied setting up full accounts for the managed users if that would just work as intended. From my seaches on the furums here, tere seems to be several people that have tried, and plex employees stating it should work but I have not yet to find any reports of it actually working.

maybe try this;

open an incognito chrome tab and go to https://plex.tv/users/other-services

you or her sign in to your wifes plex account, link or relink your sonos account

sign out/in of the player device with your wifes account, attempt to connect to sonos and if necessary follow any further sonos/plex linking prompts.

also to be clear, managed home users (sub profiles of the main account) are not supported. whether you think it worked or not, it is not going to work.

unmanaged home users (their own plex account) are supported and should work. I checked on a unmanaged home test user of mine, and at the link above I have the option to link to a sonos account.

Good idea to try an incognito tab, unfortunately it has the same effect. I also tried to completely fresh android tablet that had not had plex on it before and tied with my invite home user but it is the same thing there. The sonos account links up just fine, no issues there, but unfortunately the casting part still does not work. Plex.web simply displays no option for sonos in the case menu, and plex.android shows the option but says I need to upgrade to a plex-pass to use it.

And for clarification, I was not trying to link the sonos account to a managed user, just trying to allow a managed user to cast to a sonos device that is linked to the “master” account. I don’t see that being a major issue on a technical level. I still believe the “subscription check” in the casting code has a bug and is not recognixing invited nome users as being part of the plex-pass sbscription of the owner/admin account.

Perhaps it might work if the separate accounts have their own plex-pass subscription but that would be a little to costly for my taste, and according to Plex, this should work.
I guess I could try to sign up one account for one month to test my theory…
