Managed users

Making sure this I have this right, There is no way to allow managed users to login locally as themselves without either each managed user or myself loging into app.plex.tv first ?

Currently I’m a emby user looking to switch to plex (monthly plan for now). But this would be a deal breaker if I’m right about how this has to works.

This is true if you consider “Plex Home” setup with managed users.
You can however also share content from your server with users who have their own account.

This support article explains “Managed Users” and highlights the difference to a regular user/Friend:

Just making sure, I’ve cancelled my subscription. If this ever changes I’ll look into Plex again.

This is more idea. Manage users is okay I guess but pose a security issue.

not sure you got my point (not a native speaker).
The response was: you can do this, however you’ll need to use a different feature.

When sharing with Friends (users who have their own accounts) you can grant/limit access to individual libraries in the same way you could for a Managed User. Basically “Managed Users” are the restricted use case of a regular sharing scenario which you can use within your own household (e.g. for your children whom you don’t want to have their own accounts).

No I understood. But if I need to first login to my Plex account and then switch to theirs or if they need to login into a plex.tv. Then Plex won’t work for my household.

Family’s need to be able to have kids login locally to thier devices without needing any 3rd party outside credentials.

Not only that but it’s just plain horrible practice to require and admin to first login to anything to them switch to another account.

I was hoping to move away from emby to Plex. But this is one area where it clearly has the upper hand. Emby allows you to use a “proxy” login site. But doesn’t require it at all.

Not that I’m saying managedUsers are the best and all I just want you to know, you only need to login to the admin one time. After that, that device is set. You will never need to login as the admin again unless you clear that device/format/restore to factory/uninstall-reinstall plex.

I’m not sure where your getting your info from. But everytime the kids try to go back to the login page for our local Plex server. It redirects the to the app.plex.tv login page.

We only use the webpage, no apps or such.

The same is true if you tired to open the local auth page from an incognito/privacy tab/ window.

Never-mind then.
Do you have to use PlexWeb? I mean, can you use a client meant for Windows/Mac?

Thanks but the kids (by design) only have managed Chromebooks with filtered internet and play store access.

Security issues, managed users are intended for family members that physically live with you or people you trust completely, if you dont you should share with them instead which requires them to have their own plex account

Doesn’t matter if you are using the website it should stay logged in so that is a problem wrong setup of your device like clearing history every time you turn the computer off, blaming plex or other people for your incapability to set up your devices correctly

It’s intended for all that physically live in your household. Never should it be for anything outside your living space.

Thanks genie
