I run a Plex server and have granted access to a few relatives (who don’t live with me). They use MY account and everything works great. EXCEPT, I also use PlexPy to peak at usage statistics… and now I can’t differentiate everyone I’ve setup.
What is the proper way to setup a SIMPLE user ID for a relative to log in with using the Plex app on their Smart TV/Fire Stick, Roku, etc, etc.
I guess I’m still confused… I just shared some libraries with my sister… Now she’ll get an email and click Accept on her phone… but what does she need to do on her Fire TV stick, and XBOX Plex apps to use this new account?
Log out from the account it is currently looged in (i.e. yours).
Then log back in to her own account.
In order to do that, she’ll have to open a web browser and go to plex.tv
then log in with her own email address and password.
When the Firestick is showing her the 4-character code, she has to open the link https://plex.tv/link in her web browser (while she is logged in to her own plex account!)
Crap yeah that’s not going to happen. I cannot see my family going to the Plex site and creating PWs… It would be much easier if I could create their accounts on my server and log them in.
There is another way: managed users.
But their number is limited to a total of 14.
And you’ll have to guide them through the “user switching” procedure, after having logged in with your own credentials.
Hmmm… maybe i’ll play around with that… 14 managed users is way more than I’ll need so it sounds promising… as long as the “user switching” is only a 1 time event… I can set it up.
I have my own domains so have set up email accounts for my Mother and other less technically minded folks.
So I set up their Plex accounts for them using email addresses that come to me.
I also use Bitwarden (password manager) to keep track of these Plex sccounts.
While still logged in as “you”, you want to activate the client preference “Automatic Logon”.
This has to be done on every single client separately.
If a web browser is used as a Plex client, you need to make sure that the browser cookies of the domain plex.tv are not destroyed when the web browser is closed.
Otherwise, all the preferences are reset to defaults and you’ll have to perform the “logging in” and “user switching” again each time.
Any time I want to invite a new user, I have them hit Plex.tv and create their own account before I invite them. One would assume that if they use Netflix and the like that they can navigate around basic apps and account features.
I explain that setting up Plex is a one time pain in the butt thing they’ll have to go through. Way less painful than say… setting up their Roku though. That’s a nightmare for someone with horrible eyesight that’s attempting to use their phone to do it.
I’m legally blind and set up Roku devices for my sister. So, yea, i know what you mean.
I only set up Plex accounts for people who simply couldn’t on their own. My 80 yesr old Mother and my really dumb friend.
