Manually delete or add an entry directly in Mediathek

I am quite impressed by the plex media server. You made a fine piece of software here, thank you for that.

But there is one thing, that I really miss and can’t believe that it’s not there - so much actually, that I still think maybe it is me, that I’m simply too blind to find it.
I used the search, but couldn’t find a simple answer with explanation - instead always a tip on how to do things differently.

I am talking about the possebility to delete something from my library or manually add something.
For example: my TV Shows library shows the last episode of the third season of Stargate Atlantis as an extra tv show. Why, I don’t know - I checked the file and folder structure, or whether there is an extra nfo or something, but couldn’t find a solution.

Is there really no way to simply delete this (or any) entry right there where it is???

And if this really is not possible, could someone elaborate on why?
This is no rant! I am really interested in the answer.

In your Plex Blog you write:

We know you love collecting and curating media, and we’re going to keep building the best way for you to do it! ( April 27, 2018, Plex Media Server – a Retrospective)

If you really want to do so, please give back some power (and responsibility) to the user and allow us to have the final say on what stays and what goes in our libraries.

Putting TV shows into Plex for fun & profit®

Preparations to prevent spammy or just wrong embedded meta data to upset the Plex scanner:
Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

  1. Look up your show on TheTVDB
  2. Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
  3. Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases. Add the (year) in parentheses when episode 1 of season 1 of this show was aired.
  4. Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
  5. After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.

Yes, thank you Otto, but as I wrote:

Your post is exactly that, hence not the answer I am looking for.

Now, seriously:

Why can’t I manually add or delete an entry to or from the library?

Because Plex doesn’t work that way.

With Plex, you define folders wherein Plex will look for media files.
If you expect Plex to display them all (and with sensible meta data attached), you need to follow the naming conventions. There is no way around it.

Hi Otto,

Thank you for this somewhat more elaborate answer ;).

Then here is my appeal to the makers of plex:

Please make plex additionally work also that way.

As I said, your software is an incredible program and I enjoy using it.

It is great and astonishing what computers can do on their own nowadays, but still I want to have the last say, when it comes to presenting something to my friends.
And that rather in an easy way than by searching through my folder structures, time consumingly testing via trial and error and arranging files new so my media software would be pleased.

For me it is like to leave out the manually override in a train to open doors in case of an emergency, because you rely comlpetely on the computer system to unlock the doors if needed.
You’d NEVER do that.

Ok, maybe it is a little dramatic comparison, but still, you get my drift…

There is a way to simply throw a few files in front of Plex for digestion.
But I can’t recommend you to use it, because it means:

  • There won’t be any metadata
  • and in the case of tv shows there will be no tracking of what you have watched and what is up next in this series

Simply create a library of the type ‘Other Videos’ and point it to your video folder.
