I noticed that for the past few months, if I have a TV show and manually mark an episode as watched, the subsequent episodes no longer show up in Continue Watching. The earlier behavior was that the watched episode disappears, but the next episode shows up which is intuitive. Similarly, even if you have the option to include Season Premieres in Continue Watching, manually marking the final episode of a season as watched will prevent a future season premiere from appearing in Continue Watching.
Is this an intentional change or a regression? The behavior feels counterintuitive to me. Just because I might have watched the episode elsewhere does not mean I am no longer watching the item. If anything, marking it watched confirms that I am looking to “Continue Watching” it.
Seems to be working fine for me. Maybe there are some extra details that missing that would help explain what is happening. For a show that is in Continue Watching it would need to have at least some watch history on the server. With a show’s episode in Continue Watching if you navigate to the show’s detail page you should see under the show’s poster the episode from your Continue Watching noted as the episode “On Deck”.
I just tested this by watching the first episode in a show, then manually marking the next episode in the show as watched. You are correct that it keeps the show in Continue Watching and loads up the following episode On Deck.
If there is watch history for a prior season but not the current season, will this still work? I do not have an easy way to test this, but that is the situation that happened with me. I marked the first episode of a new season where it was already on Continue Watching from prior seasons, but that caused it to disappear.
It is possible that I had marked all the episodes of that show as watched manually instead of on Plex because I was watching it elsewhere. However, when the new season was added, it still appeared in Continue Watching. It was only when I marked the first episode of the new show as watched that it caused it to be removed.
Does marking that episode 1 as watched result in episode 2 On Deck/in Continue Watching?
I guess the last thing to check would be this usecase
Add Season 1
Mark Season 1/each episode of Season 1 watched without actually watching an episode.
Add Season 2
In this case, should Season 2 show up as Continue Watching like in your test? I’ve noticed the first episode appearing On Deck, but marking that episode as watched is what ends up removing it from Continue Watching. It might be the case that I never generated watch history for the series, so I can watch at least one episode going forward. But it’s weird that the first episode shows up fine and not the rest.
You would need to have some kind of watch history within the series for there to be any episodes in Continue Watching or On Deck.
* one more thing, removing any previous history will have the expected result of dropping that item from Deck and CW. Meaning you have history but chose to delete it (you can do this via Plex Dash).
Thanks, I think the issue is that I might not have watched any of the episodes of the show through Plex. Earlier, I think this would still allow the show to appear in Continue Watching, but I guess that changed. Understanding the logic helps a lot, and I can workaround this easily enough. Still not entirely sure why the new season premieres are appearing in Continue Watching, but I guess they might be a leftover from the earlier logic when they would still show up without any watch history.
