Because of the way my system is set up, I have to lump all my movies and TV into the one folder. Normally Plex works this out and strips out all the non-movies and non-tv from their respective folders when displaying it in the library. But sometimes a few get through. Any idea how I can manually fix this?
Apologies is there is information on how to do this already, I just spent 30 minutes (at least) looking for about the third time now and I cant find it!
That’s not going to work out well. PMS identifies things as TV shows by looking for an episode number, which can be upto 4 digits. Movies typically require including the year which is 4 digits so you can see the issue. That’s why it’s recommended to keep these separate.
I’m not sure why you have to have these files together, but I’m sure there’s a way around it. Symbolic links can be used to reorganize files without messing up the original structure.
I get that its a problem for Plex (although have they thought about checking against the length of the video? Obviously a 2-hour video is more likely to be a movie than a TV show - but I am getting distracted).
Unfortunately my set up means they have to be in the same folder. I know I know, but without going into the details (suffice to say I am pretty sure you would be super impressed) let’s just stick to that: they HAVE to be in the same folder.
So I am going to have errors and I accept that, but it would be awesome if I could overrule those errors somehow. Manually override them.
FYI: I am guessing this is not a current feature so should I have moved this to the feature request suggestions group.
You can create a feature request but I doubt it would ever get implemented. As mentioned before, PMS has to be able to identify if the file is a movie or tv show. Using the length wouldn’t be a solution either. There are TV shows that can be quite long and movies that can be quite short. Some people also have movies that are split into multiple shorter files and there are TV shows that can have multiple episodes joined into 1.
Since whatevery you’ve done is going to break Plex, I’m not impressed.
For the record though, I didn’t break Plex. Plex doesnt have 100% accuracy with sorting. To use your language, Plex is broken, you are just using a workaround by manually resorting into the folders.
All I am seeking is the ability to manually change a file from from one type to another so I can keep them in the one folder. That will get me by.
Do you have all your files in 1 folder? i.e. no subfolders at all? So you have all tv episodes individually next to other show episode and next to movies? That just seems crazy to me. How do you find anything?
I don’t need to sort it at all. I just tell the computer (that I rent in another country) what to download and it automatically downloads and then syncs with my computer here. Plex does the sorting for me once it arrives. 98% of the time it gets it right too. One of the reasons why I don’t want to sort them into separate folders is if i were to move those files, then it would upset the seeding. But that is not the only reason.
That sounds more like a filenaming issue then having them in 1 folder. If you had all your files named properly, it could possibly identify everything correctly. There are hard coded rules that PMS follows when reading the filename so it doesn’t mistakenly add TV shows to a movie library and vice versa, since Plex doesn’t have a way to show both types of content simultaneously.
You idea of wanting to be able to specify if the content is a movie or show would also run into this issue of not being able to be shown. The best alternative I can think of is an option to scan everything then allow items to be ignored through the UI. You can do this using a feature called .plexignore but that’s not as convenient as doing it through the UI.
If i changed the name of the file i would also upset seeding.
I will give you an example. I downloaded all the star trek movies in one bundle. Even though the movies are named appropriately and plex gave them the correct artwork etc, because they are in the same folder Plex thought they were a TV show.
I just want to be able to click on a file in plex and change its media type so it gets sorted properly. I don’t think the plexignore is going to help here.
Btw - thanks for your attempts at helping. I do appreciate it.
I understand what a seedbox is. Just saying that your issue is probably more related to not being able to rename the files than having them all in 1 folder.
Being able to do that won’t help. Since a movie library won’t include tv shows, if you mark something as a tv show, it will just vanish. And if it’s something Plex already thinks is the wrong type, they don’t appear and you couldn’t add them in.
remove the hard coded rules to ignore filesnames for a different library type when filetype manually modified - depending on the filetype chosen of course
include a method to ignore (not delete) unwanted content for filetype that has been moved to another type
Or you could employ Filebot and tell it to create symlinks, instead of renaming the original files.
Which was already suggested above.
Then you point Plex to the symlinks, which were created by Filebot, neatly separated by movies and tv shows, all with the necessary folders and subfolders.
