Manually rearrange episode orders

Server Version#:1.16.6.1559
Player Version#:3.108.2

Know that I have read the posts that are similar to this. I have seen a way to probably accomplish what I want to do (renaming the files with the episodes in the order I want (ie…change s01e02 to s01e14) however, before I screw up everything doing this logic dictates that Plex will then pull all the wrong info for the file down.

Meaning, where I want the TVDB (■■■■/kgb ordering system) data for episode 2 to remain with it even though I make that e14 plex will then pull down the ep 14 data and put it with that episode. Before you say use LOCAL media first, I have read that it doesn’t work much of the time, and this wouldn’t suck so much as an option if you could choose PER SHOW rules for where it gets the info. If you set it to use XXX first then it will destroy any info you put in there. If you change to LOCAL first then it has a tendency to kill some of the already pulled down info from XXX or YYY. God forbid you spend 20-30 hours making all sorts of changes and then click to refresh all meta-data. Been there, done that…lost a TON of work!!! So yeah, not something I wish to do again! Even as a TEST!

So, one current example (and there are many in my 255 series’) is Space 1999. I don’t have any desire to use any order listed on tvdb. And they have no desire to allow logical orders to be included for any reason…(as they say, because they own the site and don’t have to!!!) The airing order, DVD order, and production order are a joke if you actually care about any continuity. Of course, this isn’t how shows were made in the 60’s. This site: http://eyespider.org.uk/space/order.html has MUCH logic explained for the position of every episode in their ordering of the series. This is how I want my server to display the shows. I have changed the SORT order to numbers but noticed this has NO EFFECT on how they are displayed or played in auto-play.

Simple question…how can I make them show up in the order I want them in, not lose my meta-data, and not spend HOURS making the changes.

Tech question would be why isn’t this a feature in the server for series’?? Grab the meta-data for the episodes based on the name/number of the show…but allow the server admin to alter the viewing order. Seems like a simple thing with all the other things you can edit, alter, or fix per episode currently.

Thanks for any help or info,

The simplest solution is probably to create a playlist for the order you want. It’s what I do for Babylon 5. That gives me the aired order when clicking on the series, or the viewing order as a playlist.

Yeah, and I did the same for B5, ALL Star Trek tv shows /movies (that takes months to watch…lol) and all the SG-1 shows… However, it’s a very simple thing to allow USER ordering… Honestly, Can’t believe it isn’t done yet.

I guess I can make a comment on the series for people to see that say do NOT watch it via the series…rather ONLY watch it using the Playlist. Since I can share the playlist with users…not sure how to do it for GUESTS though…

I have to laugh that the word N A Z I is a forbidden word. LMAO!!! Let’s just eliminate all words that have anything to do with history that we don’t like… hahaha Assinine!!!

haha… no problem And for the record I did the entire Star Trek universe play list. 744 files. You do NOT want to ever do that. Make a mistake and you will be very very sorry. Since you can’t NUMBER an episode to where to go in the list you must drag and drop them IF you are adding them say after the list is done or partly done. But, since I am bored today, here is the method used:

For the start, you can usually (if the order is correct in your plex folders) just select a season and ADD to PLAYLIST. But, once they start to overlap you have to add episodes at a time. Going back and forth between the series’. This is where multi monitors helps a HUGE bunch as you can open a plex window or two in each monitor. Of course, you will get fatigued and forget where you were so then you have to refresh the playlist to see what is there or not there. This is not a big deal really, but yes a time consuming mind numbing pain!!!

Then, let’s say you are oh…400 episodes and 4 series’ into the list…and you think, crap I forgot the original movies. Now, you have to add those to the list and THEN drag them to their correct position. This means clicking, holding and dragging up at just the right screen position to have it scroll…and pray you don’t let loose of the mouse button. When that happens you just cry! And you cry loudly!!! And then, there are the MANY instances where when you release the mouse button, the show/movie/episode you were moving isn’t there. It’s somewhere… but now where you wanted it. So now you have to scroll page by page and LOOK for the title of the file. Sometimes, it never moved at all…still in the place it started…but you don’t know that until you go looking for it. This is the time you pull out your pistol and ammo and set them on the desk…

And once the list is finally done, after say 6 or 7 hours…(if you are really lucky!!!) then you PRAY that nothing happens to it. I lost all my lists 2 times…and rebuilt them both times. I now have 4 backups on 4 different hard drives/SSD drives of my Plex data files… Of course, all of that means not a damned thing if you lose a HD with your show/movies on them. Even with backups, I found, Plex disassociates the lists if those files ever vanish… So imagine all that work on Star Trek, then you lose your movie drive…thus the movies now vanish from the list…so when you get them back online, you have to do the drag and drop and pray thing again!!! For every one of them!!! Been there…done that!!!

I have begged Plex to make the Play List editable in text editor or at least make it so you can enter a list position for a file. So if a movie is the 43rd item in the list and you have 700+ items, you can simply click the item and drop down would let you select put it at 43. Everything Plex already does…that should be easier than allowing shared play lists… LOL!!!
