Many missing tags for my music library

Hi there,

After being hit by the qlocker ransmoware on my Qnap NAS, I reinstalled my NAS and had to start over with my plex server and libraries…
I’ve done this with the very same files, and configuration in my plex libraries, but I’m experiencing some troubles with the tags for my music library.

For the artists : I have a photo when browsing the library but nothing shows up in the picture thumbnail when I try to modify the artist. Also I have absolutely none background for all the artists.
Before my reinstallation, there were many picture in both of these thumbnails, and I juste had to choose the one I wanted.

In the labels thumbnail, everything is empty (style, mood, similar artists…)

And these missing informations are for appromately 99% of my library.
Strangely, I have just a bunch of artists for whom everthing works fine.

So far, I tried

  • to update metadatas several times for the last days
  • to analyse the whole base
  • to delete all the files et paste them back
  • to create a second “dummy library”
  • to go back to another scanner and another agent than ‘plex music’
  • to optimise the database and delete the bundles

And the results are still the same.

If somebody has a clue to force the metadatas tu update, I will appreciate.
Let me know if you need more information.

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4392
Player Version#:

Here’s an exemple for band AC/DC, I think it’s famous enough to have some tags

Another exemple, on of the few that works fine : Antonio Pinto

Have you verified the ID3 Tags for the actual music files? This would be done outside of Plex. Like if you played a song from Windows media player or iTunes - do you get artist/title or just a filename?

In my case the tags are correct. Artist is Micky Dolenz, Album Artist is Dolenz. Mickey, the same way I have all my other artists tagged that have worked. I’m creating a new music library and fixing tags before copying them over. I’ve selected the correct monkee Dolenz:

But he comes up blank. Others artists populate fine.

Is that a typo here? Shouldn’t it be a comma not a period for “directory style”

and for humor’s sake, what if you reversed it to be like the Artist name?

That was a typo, it is a comma. I have my entire library set this way, I want it sorted by last names like a record store and it works in plex. Anytime I’ve added an artist with the artist tag like this it has worked, and anytime I’ve “fix match” like in the picture above it’s worked and filled in the correct info. I’ve tried the plex dance as well.

I have a feeling that this is part of a larger issue as this is my first time adding Dolenz and Davy Jones in my existing library, and as niwbis posted above, he’s having all sorts of issues with it bringing in information.

Hmmm well I’m stumped there I guess.

The only real question I have left is… How about that Monkees TV show!!! hahah I used to watch it as a kid lol

Yes, all my files have tags too ; everything has been completed with TheGodfather years ago.
Also on the hard drive, my files are correctly stored in artist folder / album folders.
As I said, I’ve been reinstalling my NAS using a backup, everything like before when it worked fine.
That’s why this is driving me crazy

For the AC/DC example :

Like russbgrant, I checked the matches and they are alright, plex finds the right item but doesn’t seem to be able to get the data.
It seems to be the same issue, but for me it’s almost for all my library :’[

Oh thank you, I am very happy to see this issue being raised here on the forums.

I have been importing hundreds of artists over the last few months, tagging absolutely everything perfectly in Picard before moving it over to Plex. This has been a long, but worthwhile, process.

Starting a few weeks ago, the “tags” stopped populating on any new artists being added, as is shown in OP’s photo – it’s all blank. My Plex has also been failing to populate “popular songs.” This has been incredibly frustrating, since a big appeal of adding all of this music was to “link it all together” and utilize artist/genre/style radios. I use PlexAmp exclusively as my music player, and I really love it! But there seems to be a problem on Plex’s end that needs to be addressed.

For what it’s worth, I did manage to add an artist today and it populated the “popular songs” information, but it still failed to load any of the tags – and I know that all of this information is available on last.fm, which my server has been configured to use from day 1 and I’ve double-checked every time I’ve tried to troubleshoot this issue over the last week.

Please, please address this if it’s an underlying problem with Plex. Just let us know, “it’s an issue, we’re sorry, and we’re working on it. No ETA yet.” That’s fine. I really just want some acknowledgement that there’s an underlying problem, because this seems to be happening on both fresh and existing installs; the feature seems to be entirely broken.

I know I’m venting a bit, but I am open to suggestions on what else to try, or if someone can come along and say “hey there’s a test build that resolves this problem that should enter stable soon” or something of the sort.

And please, if this ends up being fixed, tell me and us what to do with all of the music that we’ve imported that’s currently broken. Will a metadata refresh fix it? Do we have to unmatch and rematch the artist? Do we have to remove the files completely, rescan, and re-add? Thank you!

Thank you for adding this plexampuser. I’m in the process of doing what your doing, fixing tags and adding them to the library. I’m nearly done prepping my latest batch to start adding into plex and if they all end up blank it’s going to be a real bummer after all this backend work I’m doing.

@elan , my apologies for tagging you in this but I see you posting amply about plexamp, can you please let us know that this is a recognized issue or offer advice?

Hello again, all!

I use a Synology NAS to host my Plex. There was an update that was released yesterday for my particular model. I updated to it a few minutes ago and refreshed metadata for a few artists. To my surprise, it worked!

So, I sorted my list of artists by date added (which sorts artists that received a new album, for example, so you’re apt to get some results that aren’t relevant to trying to fix this), and I selected every artist added within the last month and did a mass “refresh metadata” to all of them. Before doing this, I made sure that the artists added before this last month had correct metadata, and it looked like they all did.

And, my problem appears to be fixed!

Hope this helps. I don’t love that I didn’t see a single piece of communication from Plex about this issue, but I am thankful that it was fixed relatively quickly (within a few weeks, anyhow)

Hello,

A Plex update or a Synology update ?
Nothing new on my side, on a Qnap NAS.

I’m not wanting to hijack this thread but I have noticed that my Plex Music Libraries (running on FreeNAS, Version 1.22.3.4392) have recently stopped matching content as accurately as they previously did.

Example - all my carefully tagged Emmylou Harris albums now show Artist = Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell. True, two of her most recent albums are partnerships with Rodney, but why are all the older albums also tagged as joint ventures?

The AlbumArtist tag is there in all my files and I’ve set “Prefer Local Metadata” in the Library settings but it just seems that the ID3 data is ignored.

Question to Plex - have you recently changed the metadata source or the way that metadata is being processed?

@simonjharris @niwbis

I updated Plex from 1.22.3.4392 to 1.23.0.4459 which fixed all of my metadata issues. I found the package on this page: Media Server Downloads | Plex Media Server for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and More

I’m not sure why, but Plex never prompted me for an update. The update was only a day old, though.

Since then, I did have a single artist match incorrectly, but I’m relatively confident that this was a fluke since the few other artists/albums that I’ve imported today have matched without issue.

Hope this helps!

I believe there was a bug, but if you get the latest server and refresh metadata, it should restore any missing data.

Thank you. I see now what the website has a newer update than what Qnap pushes. I’ve been hesitant to download them from here since one a year ago had some issues, but I’ll try this later.

Thanks for the answer, but I’m already with the latest version for Qnap NAS (1.22.3.4392) since the problem occurred.

Is there any way to access previous versions so I can try to downgrade my server ?

Looks like a new one on the Plex site released today, not pushed by QNAP yet:

1.23.0.4480-fe95a312e

I’ve not tried it so I can’t comment on if this fixes the problem or not.

Where do you find this ?
I’m looking here :

And see that :
1.22.3.4392-d7c624def
April 20, 2021

Or is it a preview exclusive to the plex pass members maybe

Sorry, looks like it is for plexpass. this is my option when I go to the link you posted:
