Martians Destroyed My TV

My son and I watched the Perseverance land on Mars on Thursday, which was amazing to watch. We saw the first picture sent back and as we were talking about it, a loud pop came from the TV and the picture went dark. My 10-year old Samsung Plasma TV failed after an amazing run and what a glorious final act to show. After a moment of reflection (I bought it when Star Wars came out on Blu-ray), I now can rejoice in the fact that I can get a new 4k TV.

What to get? I would like a 65" something. What should I look for? What do you like?

Get a nice TV.
Then get a nice device to run Plex on.

Trust me when I say ANY Smart TV is way to dumb to be a Plex Client.

Actually it was the CIA and their confederates at NASA that ruined your TV. The images actually were faked just like the lunar landings and they selectively destroyed several TVs to make people mis-remember what they actually saw.

As far as a TV goes: I like the TCL brand quite a bit.
TCL TV
It is a “smart” TV but I do not recommend using the built in “smarts” as it is better to attach an external box. That way if you have another failure all you need to do is move the “box” to the new TV. If you use the built in “smarts” and your TV fails then you lose everything you have set up in the “smart” part of the TV.

Sometimes, in fact quite often, “smart” TVs are cheaper than dumb ones.

They’re certainly easier to find than dumb ones, but rest assured Smart TVs are dumber than a bag of hammers. Get a TV 'cause it looks great, not because it claims to have a diploma. <—it lies.

A quick read through Plex Forums - to see threads like this:

You can’t swing a cat in here without hitting one of them and that should send a message powerful enough to make you NOT want to join them.

When an FYI Thread has more pages than the Old Testament - one assumes that’s enough for you to want to give yourself the best possible chance of survival…:

… by getting a device that has the best chance of working. <— based on the material you’d most likely be trying to work with.

:grinning: Thanks, I will look at TCL as an option. I use a Roku Ultra right now to stream Plex, so the plan is to continue using it.

I have been INCREDIBY happy with the Samsung Q6 series. I have two of them… an older large one for the basement, and a smaller one for the living room. I have a TCL in the bedroom, and I’m infinitely happier with the picture quality of the Samsungs over the TCL.

Definitely stick to your Roku as a separate device, and transcoding 4k through Plex is a nightmare.
