Match Resolution to Video

I couldn't find anything on this, so figured it would be a good one for my first feature request.

I'd like the ability to have Plex adjust the screen resolution to match the video rather than upscaling it (in my case, it's always 1080p) first. Both my TV and surround receiver have the ability to upscale content and I think it would be a handy option, similar to the ability to match refresh rates.

I’d love to see this implemented. Im sure I saw the code has been written by someone on the XBMC forums, it just never got merged due to a disagreement over how to present the various options to the user. I’ll see if I can find the post/pull request

I don't understand this request.  Hard to vote on something I don't quite understand.  So Plex does not adjust the screen resolution?  What does that even mean?  It plays all my videos, whether 1080p or 720p, to screen size.  Isn't that adjusting the resolution?

Can you provide an example of what you mean?

Sorry, I'm lame when it comes to this technology.

I think the request is when using PHT to adjust the resolution of the monitor connected tot he computer to match the resolution of the original video file.  If the video is 720p, the resolution would change to match that, 1080p and so on.  Op, let me know if I am wrong.

I see a couple of problems with this.

1 - What if your monitor cannot support the given resolution.  My monitor only goes down to 1024x728 so can't even do 480p.

2 - How do you handle odd resolutions like 1920x800?  Would it use this resolution or would it scale to 1920x1080 or display at 1920x1080 with bars?

3 - My monitor looks horrible if it is not at the native resolution.

Sorry OP, but I do not see a practical use for this feature.

Yea, this would be full of issues left and right. Better to just up size the video.

Those issues are no different than saying, "what if your a/v receiver doesn't support dolby true-hd?". It's easy enough to allow a set of common resolutions to be made available as options.

The benefit is that there are receivers and TVs with more advanced upscalers that can make a 720p source look better in 1080p than Plex can, and it would be nice to have that option without manually changing the resolution.

Ok, that makes sense.  Your title is just a little confusing.  Since PHT already can adjust the out resolution using some standard ones, I think it sounds better  (and make more sense) to say something like:

Auto adjust PHT output resolution based on video source

Basically allow PHT to determine what resolution is the closest to the source and using that.  Then there is no issue of trying to use some oddball resolution.
