Media detection and remote access issue.

Dear Plex team,

I have been using plex for months and since a few weeks back, facing issues with the app. Earlier all features of plex such as remote access was working perfectly well.

Note: I am using the Nas Qnap HS 251. Device- Mac. Router- Netgear Model: R8000

  1. I had first faced problems with finding my server, and tried all possibilities to restart. Upon failing which I was left with no choice but to delete the server and my plex account and create a new one and start all over again.

  2. Upon adding the media to plex from NAS, it now works only when MAC is in local network and am only able to discover media folders upon manualy connecting to the NAS server to be discovered on my MAC and PLEX app (local) from NAS plex app. (Attached screenshot of icon while adding media)

  1. In my current situation, I am also unable to use remote access feature on plex as my files say as unavailable. (Attached screenshot of error message)

Only when in local network and manually mounted media drive on Mac am I able to access the media on plex.

Kindly provide assistance on this issue. I can explain furthur in detail over a call with your technical support to resolve this issue more clearly. If so, please share the customer care number.

Hope to recieve a positive response

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you are having issues using Plex.

  1. Upon adding the media to plex from NAS, it now works only when MAC is in local network and am only able to discover media folders upon manualy connecting to the NAS server to be discovered on my MAC and PLEX app (local) from NAS plex app. (Attached screenshot of icon while adding media)

I’m sorry but I don’t understand. Are you running Plex Media Server on your Mac or the NAS or both? I do not understand your screenshot, can you provide the entire screen?

  1. In my current situation, I am also unable to use remote access feature on plex as my files say as unavailable. (Attached screenshot of error message)

This error indicates that you might have more than 1 router setup on your network. You mention you have a Netgear R8000. Is this connected to another router provided by your internet provider? If so, you have what is called a double-NAT as mentioned in the error. Remote Access cannot work automatically this way. You will need to configure both of those routers in a special way to get it working. Do you have access to your internet provider’s router so you can configure it?

Only when in local network and manually mounted media drive on Mac am I able to access the media on plex.

Is this related to your #2? I’m still confused. Do you mean it only works when the media is saved on your Mac? If your media is saved onto a NAS, you need to mount your NAS to your Mac. Plex can only see your NAS if your Mac can see it.

  1. I am running the application through the NAS Qnap app for plex operating via Lan IP using my MAC. Attached are 2 screenshots. the first is of when the NAS is not detected normally. Second is of when I manually have to mount my Multimedia folder on my mac first via connecting to the server through my mac via local Lan to mske it discoverable to plex to add the folders to the app.

  2. With regards to your answer, I think it is related to #2 as when I mount the folders containing the media, I am able to play only though local Local Lan and only when my MAC is powered on.

Earlier I never use to have this issue as the media on the NAS was detected by PLEX using the same method to add the multimedia folder and it worked remotely as well as locally running directly from the NAS and not my MAC.

Awaiting a positive reply.

Sorry, but I must be dense or something. I still don’t get it. Here is what I am thinking, let me know if I’m wrong anywhere.

1 - You are running PMS on the QNAP
2 - You are using your Mac and accessing the local PlexWeb on your NAS by using it’s local ip address. i.e. https://ip of QNAP:32400/web.
3 - You have a folder called multimedia where your files are.
4 - PMS does not see this folder

Question:
Where is this multimedia folder physically located? The QNAP, your Mac’s hard drive, an external harddrive connected to your Mac, or external drive connected to your QNAP?

  1. I am operating the PMS for Qnap on my NAS.

  2. Yes, I am using my Mac to access the local Plex Web on my NAS by using local IP.

  3. Yes.

  4. PMS does not see this folder. The media when clicked upon states unavailable. As stated, I need to manually mount the Multimedia folder from my NAS server on to my MAC in order for plex to see it. Only then does the media say available.

The multimedia folder is physically located on my Qnap NAS which is accessible manually through Local Lan server.

Kindly let me know if you need more information to resolve this issue.

Can you get me the logs from your PMS? Settings \ Server \ Help \ Download logs. It sounds like you are accessing PMS on your Mac, not your Qnap. The logs will confirm.

You mentioned that you had another account before. If your QNAP is logged into your old account and you have PMS on your Mac logged into your current account, when you call up PlexWeb, even if it’s through your Qnap IP, it will bring up the server associated with the account that you are logged into PlexWeb with.

I have donwloaded the Logs folder, but unable to upload it onto this forum. Please share ur email address, ill email them.

Can you upload your logs to Google drive or some other sharing service and PM me the link.

Looks like you have PMS installed both in the NAS and in the Mac, and when you initiate PlexWeb it comes up pointing to the Mac. Can you switch to the NAS ? You can use the same userid in PMS both in Mac and NAS, but server names need to be different.

Also, it’s not a good idea to have your media in the Multimedia shared folder, as explained in Q14 in QNAP FAQ

Attached is the link to the Logs.

When the NAS is not mounted and not visible on plex.

When the NAS is mounted manually via mac and visible by plex.

Hope to recieve a solution.

Your logs are from PMS running on a Mac. So this is correct. If you are running PMS on a Mac, your NAS needs to be mounted to your Mac for PMS to see it.

If you are looking to run PMS from your NAS, you are doing it wrong. The best option might be to delete PMS from your Mac, that way there is only 1 PMS to access.

I would like to run PMS from my NAS. I have deleted the PMS on my mac and when I try to log in through my local ip through Nas onto plex via the app on the NAS, I am facing the following error.

I have also tried to rename my Multimedia folder as suggested, on my Nas; but the Qnap Filestation interface has no option to do so. Kindly let me know if you know how to do so.

I’m confused by this. What did you do? You should be using your Mac and browsing to “https://IP_OF_NAS:32400”.

I have also tried to rename my Multimedia folder as suggested, on my Nas; but the Qnap Filestation interface has no option to do so. Kindly let me know if you know how to do so.

You don’t need to rename the folder. Now that you are using your NAS as the server, the NAS folders should appear when you try to create a library.

@raiyan1991 If you want to install PMS (Plex Media Server) in the HS-251 please note that its processor is significantly slower than your Mac. Therefore, if you need transcoding, this may be a problem.

Having said so, please read QNAP FAQ, the problems that you are having with your PMS installation are probably referred there. During installation NAS and Mac should be in the same LAN (remote access is possible in this phase but it requires technical skills to make it work).

I have done the needful and the Media Server has been detected from the NAS directly. Thank you.

I am facing issues with direct connection which I havent faced till now. attached are the screen shots. How do i connect directly.

Check this. https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200931138-Troubleshooting-Remote-Access

@raiyan1991 Please do the following:

  1. Stop PMS
  2. Start PMS
  3. Access your library with the client that says that it is remote (by the way, which client are you using ?)
  4. Collect logs and post them here

Are you using myqnapcloud to access your QNAP ? Or are you using it’s physical IP ?

Awaiting Assistance.

I have done Step 1 & 2.

Step 3) My server is remote and upon trying to get a direct connection, it says indirect connection available.

  1. Where do I post the logs?

On the laptop I am using plex through its website.

On the Smart TV, Eg: Samsung, I am using its in built app.

On Android, I am using the plex app from its store.

Looking for a positive solution at the earliest.
