Media server stuck on "Starting"?

Excatly what I thought!

I used the recovery (cmd+r) when booting up so it downloaded the OS from Apples servers and reinstalled purely just the OS.

Quite possible they have updated the version of Python in their stored OSX version.

Either way happy it now works. I was expeting to have an application interface with Plex Media Server but I see it's all web based now. Just happy to be using it and seems to be working well also.

Thanks for the help!

You are welcome.

Remember though, if the Python version was not the reason, then it was something else that was borked in your system. So keep in mind what you install/alter in case it returns for some reason. Be vary when installing things like plugins to Safari (for example adblockers or similar), maybe that can affect this.

I'm really sorry everyone... I recently sent out an update which turned out to have some problems, and prevents the media server from starting. By the time we realised, it'd already been downloaded by several users. We've taken the bad update offline, so it won't affect anyone else.

If you've been hit by this problem, you can resolve it by taking the following steps:

  • Quit the media server by selecting the Plex icon in your Mac's menu bar, and choosing "Quit" from the drop-down menu.
  • Open the folder "/Users/(username)/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins" in Finder.
  • Delete "Framework.bundle", and "System.bundle" or move them to the trash.
  • Restart Plex Media Server.
After that, everything should be back to normal. Please post in this thread if you're still having issues, and again I sincerely apologise for any trouble this has caused.

Hi,Thanks for the effort, I already tried that but it keeps crashing. The 9.6 version works, with all the audio bugs. I'm including my log files, http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12919222/Plex%20Media%20Server_2013_04_13.zip

cheers!

Hello,

I have read through most of the post to get my Plex up running. When I start it is stuck in starting like described in the start of this string. I am running OS 10.8.3, and am trying to run Plex Version 0.9.7.22.511-4b5280f.

I am a newcomer, so this is the first time I am trying to set up this. I have looked for some of the files listed that should be deleted, but can not find plex-files in the library.

I would appreciate any recommendations regarding how I could get Plex up running.

Thanks

I assume that you are looking in the wrong library. Apple has hidden the user Library which is the one you should look in. Go to Finder and hold down alt on the keyboard and click "Go" in the finder menu. You should now see "Library" in that menu.

I have the same problem. I am new, so I have not been able to delete the mentioned files because could not find them in my Mac. Atrus, do you gave a extra hint on how to find the files to sort this issue? My plex has not worked for a week now and it is driving me nuts!!

Thanks for your help!

I just figured it out.

Thanks!

Thank You! This saved my day.

I too had issues with getting Plex to init beyond the "Starting" state.

The lack of information in the logs didn't help.

Ended up running Plex Media Server directly (/Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/MacOS/Plex\ Media\ Server) to discover issues with lxml and OpenSSL python libraries that came with the package located here (~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/Framework.bundle/Contents/Resources/Platforms/MacOSX/i386/Library).

After building them locally and replacing the original ones, everything's working.

Wait, wait, wait ... can I just make sure I'm reading this right ... the Plex Dev Team said in September TWO THOUSAND AND TEN that they had identified a problem with an update that was causing it to get stuck during startup ... and now in TWO THOUSAND AND THIRTEEN, I and (judging from the fact that this thread is still pinned) all other Mac users are still expected to manually resolve this?!

As a first-time user of Plex, I have to say this is not a great way to make a first impression ... especially when you're trying to persuade people to stump up the cash for your PlexPass upgrades.  Why should anyone pay you any money for anything if it takes you THREE YEARS to resolve an issue you identified yourselves within 24 hours of it appearing?

Loose the attitude. Why do you think it is the same bug that it was in 2010?

I'm still having this problem; deleting those bundles didn't do anything.  This is frustrating!

Having the same problem, just hangs on 'starting'

This is a fresh install, have deleted and reinstalled numerous times now still hanging.

Have tried all the above suggestions and nothing fixes the problem. Have tried the latest plexpass release also and still the same

any suggestions?

Did you also delete the "Plex Media Server" folder in the your users Application Support folder when you reinstalled?

Yes, made no difference...at the time

....but i got a result last night when I installed 0.9.8.10.215 again from the main website download page and it seems to work, albeit very slow at opening

0.9.8.11 still does not work though??

There seems to be an issue with installing a fresh copy of 0.9.8.12. which I have come across when I bought a new Mac Mini for a dedicated plex server. It get stuck in starting and I get a error 404 on the safari web page when it tries to open the plex web page. I deleted all of the bundles as recommended about, but the only fix was to install 0.9.8.10 and then upgrade it to 0.9.8.12 afterwards.

You might want to take a look at the issue.

Cheers

I'm having the same issue except I had to go back to 0.9.8.6 to get it to install. I can't update.

When I run "check for updates" it tells me PMS 0.9.8.6 is currently the newest version.

This needs some updating on osx to remove pms properly.

http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/PlexNine_Tips_and_Tricks#Plex_Media_Server

I had this 404 error and the only thing to fix it was to copy my pms folder from my old mac to my new one. I believe something might be missing to generate the missing files that is causing this error.

What would be great is a automated way to uninstall pms in the first place on whatever os you are using instead of searching around for this issue. The issue is definitely in:

~/library/application support/plex media server

It looks like its something in both of the plugins folders. Once I put them back it fired back up perfectly.

I would recommend to backup your ~/library/application support/plex media server/plug-ins & plugin support folder before you uninstall pms on osx. Maybe add this to the wiki for osx.

Is there something in there that would make sense to cause a 404 error?

Found the issue webclient.bundle & framework.bundle are the main bundles needed as well as a few more. Why are these not installed automatically when you install plex as well as the plugin support folder?

Maybe you can download them from here:

https://github.com/plexinc

I assume these need to be installed on osx automatically when plex media server is started to prevent this issue. If I keep this up I should start working for you guys. I should get a free plexpass for this

To make this as simple and basic as possible back up your plug-ins and plug-in support folders. Uninstall pms with the linked instructions at the top of my post then reinstall and start pms to genrate some of its folders then copy these folders to ~/library/application support/plex media server/ then quit and restart pms. Enjoy pms working on osx again

*Update I was missing all metadata besides channels on pms which left all my icons grey/black. A quick add and remove of the library’s content fixed it up quick for all of my pms clients

So I can't even begin to explain how many problems I have been having with plex.  It went from working perfectly, to no longer working at all.  I've tried everything in this forum and finally just deleted the PMS and tried to restart all over again.

AT which point it told me a problem had been detected with a core component of plex… no idea what's going on and after years of using and loving plex I am about to give up all together.  Would love to use the new software and would love to buy a lifetime of plexpass but at this time I don' really see the point.

Below is my log.. can anyone help?
