Media Server Update Problem

Ok, that is normal and expected if you have never moved the Plex data folder.

Do you have a Torrent client software or an FTP server software running on this computer?

Not to my knowledge, I certainly haven’t intentionally or knowingly set that type of software up

Any other software which is non-standard (besides Plex) installed on that computer?

If you are just using the default Windows Defender as anti virus, have you taken a look into its log files? It may have “found” malware in a folder related to Plex, and then locked access to the file or even the whole folder.
Look in the control panel, under Update & Security, Windows Security, Open Windows Security, Virus & Threat Protection, Protection History

I’m not sure what software would be described as “non standard”. I have installed software over the years but I don’t link the installation of that software as being a trigger point to the start of my plex problems. The main / initial prex problem I was trying to address was that I couldn’t update plex. This problem didn’t start after I installed new software, in fact I haven’t installed any new software for ages. I’ll look at the control panel as you advise

I’ve looked at what windows defender is saying. A few apps under “low risk” were removed but this was back in early 2021. I’m told everything is currently ok. There is no mention of anything plex related

Then I am almost out of ideas.
Do you know how to create a new Windows user account? If you do, create a “local” account (i.e. without the need to provide a microsoft account name). Then log out of your current Windows user account and log in to the new account.
Try to start Plex server in there. See if it works (It will behave as if Plex was never installed).

Otto, I’m not sure how to create the new Windows account but I have an I.T. friend who could probably help me with this. I’ll get him to have a look at things. If I create a new Windows account does this mean I’ll need to do a fresh install of Plex to it? Thanks again for trying, I’m humbled by the time & effort you’ve afforded me.

You don’t need to install the Plex server software again, as it is already installed.
But the new user account will have a different folder for all its user data – which includes the Plex server data. So Plex will behave as if it was never installed.

This is merely an experiment. Just to see if there is probably some issue with your existing Plex server data.

I understand. Will leave this just now & update you once I’ve tried the new account. Thank you again Otto, best wishes.

I would also try opening an administrator command prompt and typing sfc /scannow and see if it fixes anything. Otherwise any chance you would allow me to use AnyDesk and remote over to your computer and take a look, and see if I can figure anything out? If you are uncomfortable with a remote desktop program I completely understand.

Hey Otto. Just for the sake of trying I uninstalled Plex & reinstalled the latest version again. All is up & running fine, server was found immediately. Haven’t a clue why it worked this time but never the less, all is well. Thank you & best wishes.

Thank you for your advice. For some unknown reason a further uninstall then a reinstall has rectified the problem
