I recently tried out Roon, and I got to say it is a great music server / player. Issue is, Roon is not built to permit the following : Stream music outside of your LAN (really. this is not joke) and possibility to share your library with friends (yes, this is also not a joke).
But I have to say I was impressed by Roon due to its look and feel, and features plex music is definitely missing ! Here they are :
Roon automatically detects the duplicated albums, and do put the different versions in a single occurence. This avoids to see the same album several times in your library.
Roon has a duplicates filter, which allows you to delete the albums duplicates that were detected in point 1 ! you simply check which version fits your needs (Eg: the one that has the highest bitrate (which is displayed on screen!), and voilà !
Roon has a WAY better genres support and descriptions !
Roon do display the music information in a clearner, better and more comprehensive way
Are the plex devs motivated enough to improve plex so it gets the best of Roon ? Allowing plex users to reach that level of software quality ? I’m quite sure peopoe behind plexamp are music enthusiast. I’d love to see this happening !
If Roon did had remote streaming and library sharing, I would have bought it right away. Now I hope my lifetime plex pass gives me some right to request for Plex to reach this level of quality !
The biggest thing that I liked about roon was gapless chromecast playback…that’s like q huuuuuuge for me. Don’t know why plex won’t at least comment about.
That’s funny because you’re advocating for exactly what a lot of music collectors DON’T want. Namely, software that makes assumptions, modifies metadata tags (genres, etc.) and is unable to distinguish between different pressings of the same album. Bit rate doesn’t determine which version or rip is best. Far from it.
ROON sounds perfect for those who prefer that someone else manage their music library.
PS Using PLEX DLNA in conjunction with Hi-Fi Cast (for Andoird), you get gapless playback via Chromecast. Check it out.
Allowing PLEX control over the source of music metadata is a recipe for disaster. PLEX has changed its 3rd-party metadata provider at least 3 times since I started using it. Every time they did, it created a ridiculous amount of work to restore things. By restore, I mean to make them accurate/correct. Unlike with movies, maintaining embedded metadata tags for music is the only way to ensure that your library is accurately tagged, regardless of what PLEX decides to do.
I speak from personal experience, as opposed to theory. No sarcasm required.
