I am actually going through all my music files and refine the meta data.
What must I do if I have several CDs from an artist where the name of the artist changes:
XYZ
XYZ and the blues band
XYZ and ABC
Am I right to put the album artist just to XYZ so they are shown later all under the name XYZ?

Yes. You could assign the changing names as track artists – but for Plex to consider them to be part of the same album, they need to have the same album artist.
Silly question: are you making your changes right in musicbrainz or only locally in your library?

The album artist is the artist to whom the album belongs (e.g. showing under the artist mode). Track artists can be different – usually this is used to show the individual artists who were part of a specific track or the artists within a compilation.
musicbrainz.org is one of the online sources used by Plex for music metadata
