Dear Plex devs,
I am a movie enthusiast. Collecting and watching movies is one of my hobbies. This is the reason, why I am not a happy streaming service customer. With them, I have no control over the media and their quality/availability.
I have tons of DVDs, of blu-rays “plexed” (converted and and added to a Plex library, that is). I can choose covers and other metadata… this is fantastic. It’s state of the art, it makes our life as consumers easier. And it spares me from having all these physical media in those wall shelves.
But as a collector, I still need to know, from which physical (or digital) medium I got this video from and whn this physical mdium was released.
Because I check sources like blu-ray.com (among others) and I want to make sure to have a newly released medium if my own old source is of less good quality.
For DVDs, this might be easy, but for blu-rays… well, there were three different releases of this or that German blu-ray… now a new one is available. I want to manually check if my old medium should be replaced with the new one.
Plus, I collect movies and I want to know if a film is from the German blu-ray label “Filmjuwelen” and when that medium was released in Germany.
At the moment, I need to collect this info outside of Plex or put these bits of info into a Plex “label” or “edition” metadata field. I am fine to do all of that manually.
But for my CC or my Filmjuwelen (or whatever) collection, I want to create a smart collection and sort this collection by either the release date of that blu-ray disc or the spine number of CC if there’s any.
Here are the metadata fields which I would appreciate to have:
- source medium type (Web, VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, Laser Disc, TV recording, etc)
- source medium release date (date field)
- source medium release country
- source medium distributor/publisher
- source medium label (like Filmjuwelen or Criterion Collection or Warner Archive Collection or whatever)
- source medium label number
Of course, sorting by “source medium label number” or “source medium release date” should be a possibility Filtering should be needed for all of these metadata fields.
By now, I can use the label fields to set “German Blu-Ray” and “Filmjuwelen Collection” and to “Filmjuwelen #013” and to “released 01-12-2012”. But I can hardly use them in a way I want.
