Metadata for songs is empty and unable to save edits to correct

Server Version#: docker image 1.40.3.8555-fef15d30c

For the songs in 2 albums, the metadata for each song shows with empty Album Artist, Artist and Album. Editing them through the Plex GUI and hitting save does not update the metadata. I have confirmed using ffprobe (within the docker container) that the metadata does exist within the mp3 file. Other songs in other albums are fine and I am able to edit the metadata for those songs. The permissions for these files is the same as the rest. Note that I have found something strange (I assume) in the server log. I would assume that the ID is unique for each song, but the songs in the problem album appear to also be used for a different album by a different artist. Is this expected? Also, I’m in the dark about path matching. This is a unique path to the song so I’m not sure what it is matching…

Can you please post a copy of your server logs ? might be an issue you didnt see

Plex Media Server Logs_2024-07-01_14-06-33.zip (3.6 MB)
Here are the logs. Thanks for taking a look at them!

Not seeing anything obvious, @ChuckPa any thoughts?

Of course not. Plex never touches your media files.

All edits you make within Plex are only stored in the Plex data folder. They are never written back into the media files themselves.

My recommendation is to avoid editing within Plex as much as possible.
Only use dedicated metadata apps to create/correct metadata. Outside of Plex and preferably before adding them into a Plex library.
Using the recommended file naming and folder organization right from the beginning, also helps to avoid having to edit within Plex.

For mp3 metadata, you can use a multitude of editors. I have used both Kid3 and mp3tag with success.

I know that. My point was that the file had the information needed (in the metadata). Plex ignores it. It also doesn’t allow me to edit the data in the Plex data folder. This is unlike any other song in my library - it it just for songs in these two albums. Other media managers can see the metadata on these files and handles it appropriately. It is only Plex that has this problem and I have no idea why nor what I can do to work around it. If Plex can not handle all of my music that makes plex unusable for me. I have a lifetime PlexPass but need my music.

I’d first verify that the files in question are actually mp3 files. (and not just wav or aac or something else which just had their file name extensions changed)

If you are sure these are mp3 files, I’d check (and repair) them with software like this: MP3 Diags download | SourceForge.net

Then verify their embedded meta tags for accuracy and completeness. (using external apps)
Then perform the Plex Dance with the whole album.

The Plex Dance soled my problem! Thank you for the pointer
