Hello. Recently the metadata for Coronation Street S67 has become incorrect. I have my server set to use tvthedb as the metadata source, which shows today’s episode (31st August 2026) as E160 (https://thetvdb.com/series/coronation-street/episodes/11929831)
However, in my library, today’s date is showing for episode 158. Also, episode 155 is missing metadata like a description. It seems Plex’s metadata source is glitched for this show/series.
I don’t follow this show so I’m not sure what the right answer is. TMDB shows the August 31 episode as 161.
But that is kind of beside the point. Plex defaults to TMDB ordering and uses external IDs to point to the corresponding episodes on TVDB. Unfortunately, there are no external IDs listed on TMDB, at least for August which all I checked. Without the external IDs, Plex is just making a best guess for what the show metadata should be
Ah, so even though I’ve set it to use thetvdb it still relies on these external IDs on tmdb?
I guess I need to follow up there then. The episodes were correctly tracking in thetvdb until last week I believe.
Yes, the external ID is how plex can match the TVDB & TMDB episodes. It is also how Plex can do the various episode orderings and keep things straight.
I just went back and looked at Aug 21st and it doesn’t have an external ID. I don’t know how Plex is matching things up without the ids. Like I said before, without them, Plex is just guessing. But at least its better that having incorrect IDs. Then it will try to match to the wrong episode or even a non-existent episode.
The episode summaries for the Aug 31 episode are so different between TVDB & TMDB, I wasn’t even sure if they were talking about the same episode.
Yes, try to find where things start to do wrong.
Oh, can you post the guids for that episode? When you are looking at the episode, click the 3 dots, at the bottom of that popup is “Get Info”, click that and a window will pop up with the episode information, click on View XML. Another tab will pop up with a bunch of xml. That is the episode metadata. Somewhere in there you’ll see some lines <Guid id=. Those are the Ids that TVDB, TMDB use to track that episode in their databases
This is from my episode 158, which is Friday 28th August on thetvdb but Thursday 27th on tmdb:

I’ve tried adding a few external IDs on tmdb. Will see how it goes. Thanks for your help
IDs should definitely help. It will probably take a few days for Plex to ingest them and sort things out.
Oh, you might want to add some IDs for the upcoming week.
I added a Coronation Street & Season 67 to my testing library. I set it to TVDB (aired) episode ordering. Seems Plex knows about TVDB ids since I see this guid for the Aug 31 episode Guid id=“tvdb://11929831” which is correct. Plex just doesn’t know how to match things up. It’s calling todays episode 158 since it thinks Fridays episode was 157. Doesn’t even seem to be aware there was an episode yesterday.
Ah, I see why TMDB and TVDB are one-off in the episode numbers. It goes all the way back to Jan 5. There are two episodes listed on that day. Apparently there was a crossover with Emmerdale. I think they have the Emmerdale metadata listed as an episode which is why the episode count is off.
