Some shows working correctly some won't work at all

Some TV shows just wont populate in the library no matter what i do

It goes so far as to say the folders are empty when they aren’t. I’ve tired changing the file extensions of the files (some are .mp4 others are .m4v)

VLC reports the codecs are the same between the files that work and the files that don’t.

I’ve tried renaming the files to be as simple as ep1.mp4 but that didn’t work either.

The files aren’t corrupted they play in windows media player and VLC just fine.

Plex has all the permissions it needs it’s built my other libraries fine.

It’s just these random shows that as far as i can see shouldn’t be different at all.

Plex Documentation → Your Media → Naming & Organizing Your TV Show Files

You must follow Plex naming and organization guidelines (ep1.mp4 does not do so).

Read the linked guide and rename your folders & files appropriately.

Write back if you run into difficulties. Include the directory path and file names with extension (directory listing, screenshot, etc.).

well some python based renaming later and it’s fixed. Thanks really appreciate it.

i was sure this view would show every at least video file in these folders as like a sorta manual fall back but apparently not. That’s why I thought something deeper was wrong

Glad you have things working.

If Plex cannot match it, then it won’t display it. Applies to both movies and tv shows. Everybody bends the rules a bit, but if you stray too far, then Plex may match it incorrectly or not display it at all.

An FYI that Plex can read embedded metadata in MP4/M4V files (not in MKV or others). If the metadata is wrong, the media may not display correctly. To enable/disable, edit the library → Advanced → Prefer local metadata.

If there is something you don’t want to rename, don’t care if it matched, etc., then use an Other Videos library. Plex does not try to match contents to any online database (TMDB/IMDB/TVDB). You won’t get cover art, cast list, etc., but if you don’t care, are going to watch and immediately delete, etc. then it doesn’t matter.
