Why aren't some movies showing in my library while others are?

I have 8 movies I’ve recently saved that aren’t showing up in a library I have them on a NAS drive. What is strange is 4 other movies in that file folder do show in my library. All are MP4 files. File names are all similar but different. I even added a number to the beginning of each file to help differentiate each file. Are the file names still to similar??? Any thoughts on what I can do to get the files to show up in my library would be greatly appreciated.

Are they being put into a movie library with the date in (parenthesis)? If they are similar enough and you’re not naming them exactly right they might be getting scanned in as duplicates

Don’t do this. It will likely make the problem worse

mp4 files can have embedded metadata. If you have your library set to use embedded metadata tags it can also cause a mismatch

Movie file / folder yes. I deleted the files with the numbers. I tried adding 2 of them again with distinct names but they still aren’t showing up. I’d like to have them grouped together somehow as they are eight episodes of the same show but until I figure out how to get them to show in the library at all the point is moot.

no dates so no brackets. The file names are formatted as follows: Name: S1E1 Episode Title, Next episodes is titles Name: S1E2 Episode Titles, etc. As previously stated, I’d like to keep these files together if I can but first need to figure out how to get them to show up in my library. The article you send looks like an option to keep them together in a movie file with the name of the show, i.e. Movie/Nane but I’m not sure how to go about setting that up.

Are they movies or TV show episodes?

You cannot mix the two in Plex. They must be in separate libraries.

Plex also has specific naming requirements for TV shows.

See Plex DocumentationYour Media for information on how to organize and name your media files.

Not really shore how they are categorized. I suppose I can set up a library for TV shows and see if they show up. I will also review the ink you provided…Thanks.

It can be a pain at first but the media organization rules are not optional.

Look it up in IMDB, TMDB, or TVDB. Use how they have it categorized.

If you’ve many movies/shows to name, there are tools that can help. Filebot is popular. The free version of Tiny Media Manager works quite well. There are many others as well.

TMM Renamer Patterns:

  • Show Name: ${showTitle} (${showYear})
  • Season: Season ${seasonNr2}
  • Episode Name: ${showTitle} (${showYear}) s${seasonNr2}e${episodeNr2} ${episode.title}
  • Movie Name: ${movie.originalTitle} (${year}) {tmdb-${movie.tmdbId}}

PowerRenamer in Microsoft Power Tools is helpful for simple renaming with pattern matches or regular expressions. It makes quick work of tasks such as adding a year to file names, removing undesirable text from multiple files, etc
