I’m hoping someone with experience of this might be able to point me in the right direction or give me a bit of a helping hand.
I have a whole bunch of family videos that I’m creating a Plex server for so my (rather large!) extended family can all look at videos people wanted to share (we tried doing this with Apple, but it just wasn’t quite right).
I have a Mac, so I use a piece of software called Subler to edit the MP4s MetaData before I put it to the Synology NAS that everyone can access. Subler allows me to add all sorts of information to the metadata of each file - like who created it (mother, sister, etc) or what the video is about (description) etc etc etc. I have done this for file… which I then thought would pull through on Plex. And… they do… sometimes. And sometimes they don’t… or sometimes the description pulls through correctly and sometimes it doesn’t.
Which makes me think I’m doing something wrong? Has anyone had any experience of this and could share the workarounds or solutions to it?
Thank you - sorry, I should have said… I’ve done the ranking for the agents already (it doesn’t pull information down from the net, it only uses the local information). It’s just odd… in that it sometimes will display the description, and sometimes it won’t… even though I’ve used the exact same metadata field?
I also have everything in their own folders Which is nice… but I do like Plex’s cool ability to show… say… mother taking a video of my sister… and then have it show similar videos with them both in it.
Hope that makes sense! And thanks for your help with this.
In Subler, use Long Description instead of Description. The info should be displayed on the pre-play screen in Plex.
Plex does not pick up all the fields. Name, Genre, Studio, & Director are picked up. Release Date and Comments are not.
Plex is hit or miss picking up embedded cover art. It works about 95% of the time. However, I’ve some media where Plex refuses to automatically pick up the cover art. I can manually select it. No idea why it does not work automatically. I cannot pin it down to picture type, size, resolution, etc. Seemingly random.
Here’s some info from a concert video and how it displays in Plex. This is in an Other Videos library. Scanner = Plex Video Files Scanner, Agent = Personal Media. Local Media Assets enabled, as displayed in @SE56’s earlier post.
Thank you so much! This was what I was looking for… knew someone out there must have used Subler and Plex together before.
Long description it is!
Yes I’ve also noticed the weirdness with picking up cover images… but this is I guess less important for me as most of mine don’t have them (unless I’ve put a picture there!).
Thanks again. If you have any other Subler tips with Plex, I’d welcome them!
