Migrate manually created playlists from old Windows server to newly created NAS server

Server Version#:
Player Version#:
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I think I already know the answer to this, but thought I would ask just in case. I just completed the migration of my server from Windows laptop to a Synology NAS. Successfully transferred all media and nearly all the metada, with the exception of my manually created playlists (smart playlists did fine, of course). I think I remember reading long ago that this would be the case, but I’m wondering if there is ANYTHING at all that I can do to transfer the manual playlists before I delete the old server from my laptop

EDIT: So it seems I was wrong about the smart playlists. They show on the new server, but when I try to play any of them I get an error, and when I view them they contain no tracks. The manual playlists are far more important to me though

@tom80H thanks for recent response regarding the feature request threads. Can you please give me a response to the above ^^^

If you’re migrating a machine following all the steps from the related support article, this should take care of the full setup… including playlists and all.

If you’ve changed the mount point or relative paths of your media files, you might need to add a few steps for Plex to fully catch up on those changes.

Thanks @tom80H. I’ll take a look at this when I have a little more time. I might have additional questions :grin:

@tom80H I want to thank at the start, knowing that you’ve been very helpful to me in the past.

My current situation is that I set up a new server on a Synology DS220j, solely to act as a Plex server exclusively for music. I migrated from a Windows setup but still have that server running on my laptop.

The migration was only successful to a degree. My music ratings came through, but not completely; probably 95 - 98%. My smart playlists appeared but would not load the tracks. I have deleted them from the new server as they were useless, but they still exist on the original one. My manually created playlists did not make it to the new server at all, and those are the ones I care most about.

So, apparently I missed some crucial files when I migrated the metadata.

Given that I still have the old server, is there ANYTHING I can do, short of a complete uninstall of the new server with another attempt at migrating the correct data? In other words, can I still grab those files from the original server and and plug them into the new one without an uninstall/reinstall? Is it possible at all that just one of those folders contains what I need to successfully transfer the playlist metadata? Or is it all just a pipe dream?

No need for a full uninstall… but I’d go with redoing the full migration procedure to avoid making things even worse.

@tom80H Can you please point me to the correct document for migration from Windows 10 to DSM 7.2 on Synology NAS? Thanks again!

@tom80H

I’m finally in the process of trying to make this happen but it’s not going smoothly. These two steps are confusing me because #10 I’m not seeing how to change the owner to plex:users and #11 I’m not seeing the same path/folders that are described

  1. Right-click ā€œPlex Media Serverā€ and set the properties - owner as ā€œplex:usersā€ for ā€œthis folder, sub-folders, and filesā€ (checkbox)

  2. Using File Station
    a. Navigate to Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/
    b. Delete everything found here. These tokens are incompatible with Linux. New will be created as needed without issue.

Are you doing those steps on the Syno (DSM admin page)?

Nothing that I read told me to go to the admin page. I’ll see what I can see

Everything from step 4 onwards is done on the Syno web interface.

@tom80H

Yes, I’ve been on the Synology interface, working in File Station and here’s what I have >>>

This path does not exist for me >>>
Plex / Library / Application Support

What I do have is Plex Media Server / App Data / Plex Media Server /

This is where I found the Plex Media Server folder that I renamed to PMS.orig It is still there
This is also where I moved the Plex Media Server folder to, from the Windows setup.

If I open the newly transferred Plex Media Server folder I see folders that include the following >>> Cache, Codecs, Crash Reports, Diagnostics, Drivers, Logs, Media, Metadata, Plug-In Support, Plug-Ins, & Updates followed by a .LocalAdminToken @ 42 bytes, SetUpPlex.html @ 12KB and a whole bunch (as in many many pages) of SetUpPlex.html.temp… files each @ 12KB

That’s everything that transferred from Windows. I’m pretty sure I don’t want to delete all of it.

I’m fairly sure that I followed the steps to get where I am accurately
