Migrating DS220 -> DS423+ - Gotchas & Caveats?

Server Version#: Version 1.41.2.9200
PlexPass: Yes
Source Server: DS220+, 2x10TB HDD DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 1
Destination Server: DS423+ 4x16TB HDD, 1TB nVMe DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 1

Greetings, many thanks for the years of help I’ve received lurking here; about to move my existing 220+ to a new 423+.

After much research and looking through many threads including this helpful one, I’ve determined that the simplest path forward is to use the Synology Migration Assistant - is that correct?

Are there caveats or pitfalls that I should be aware of when doing the migration? Should I attempt to move DSM on the Destination NAS to the nVMe drive, or will that run the risk of mucking things up?

Appreciate any pearls of wisdom or cautionary notes - thank you all in advance (especially ChuckPa, you’ve helped me more than my own undergraduate education

@daxterg

If you’re migrating to the new Syno by moving all the drives and then using Synology Assistant,

  1. There are no caveats / dangers
  2. Shutdown the old Syno
  3. You’ll move all the drives
  4. Power up the new Syno
  5. Start up Syno Assistant
  6. Let it find the new NAS
  7. It will tell you you have a Migrateable Synology NAS
  8. It will then want to update DSM to the correct firmware for your new machine.
  9. All the current configuration and data will be kept intact
  10. When complete, it will reboot
  11. It’ll come up and take the place of your old Syno.

Thank you!

in this case, I will not be/don’t want to physically re-use the old drives; I’ve got a current 2-bay (2x 10TB) and a new 4-bay (4x16TB). I assume I don’t want to physically move the 10TB drives, because I want to max out using all 4 16TB drives in the new NAS. Can I still do the migration as clean as you indicate, using the Syno Migration Assistant wizard to keep my existing PMS installation intact?

oh, That will be a little bit different.

You can move PMS to the new NAS after you move all your media to it
It’ll just take more time.

You won’t be able to use the Migration Assistant for the migration.
You will use it to setup the new NAS.

At most you’ll backup the configuration (download it) then upload it to the new one AND change its IP address.

  1. Setup the NAS as a new unit
    – Put your drives into the single RAID volume
  2. Download your shared folder configuration from the DS220
    – Upload to the DS423

Now for the fun part

  1. FileStation - Tools - Remote Mount
    – Mount the exported shared folder from the DS220 on the DS423
  2. Start copying from one to the other NAS → NAS

And just to expand on the “fun part” - if your 10TB drives are near full, plan on the file transfer taking over 24 hours for each drive.
