I am a complete Plex newbie, so apologies if I am asking a very dumb question, but I am beating my head against the wall here and can’t seem to find a solution.
I recently purchased a Synology DS418play and have it configured and running as expected. I have moved my 1.5 TB iTunes Library over to the NAS, and am still able to access that from my Mac Mini as I always have (the difference being that I used to use a FireWire connected external drive rather than a NAS.)
With the demise of iTunes, I have been eyeing a move to Plex for some time. I have installed Plex on the NAS; however, I can’t get past the most basic step in the configuration process. When I go to add the various libraries, the Plex UI is not able to see the iTunes directories in the NAS folder structure. I have modified permissions, made the Plex user an admin, moved the folder around on the NAS - everything I can think of to attempt to fix the issue, but I seem to be stuck at this point. I can’t even begin to start using the features of Plex because I can’t get my initial libraries created.
I hope I am misunderstanding something obvious, but I’m really stuck. Any advice or thoughts on how to proceed moving forward?
Linux doesn’t work that way. On Synology, admin is just another user.
I urge you to take plex back out of the administrators group. It will cause problems down the road.
The key to Synology with Plex is making certain user Plex has permission to the shares containing the information.
In this announcment, you’ll see where I show how to work with the unprivileged user “Plex” in DSM’s environment.
The share’s “Permissions” tab is critical to all things on Synology.
I had actually already removed the plex user from administrators - I just tried that as a troubleshooting step.
The missing part for me was that the shares themselves have additional permissions to be set. I was working in File Station, but needed to be in Control Panel. I was hoping this would be an easy fix, and it certainly was.
Appreciate your quick response - I’m off and running!
