Migrating from Roku to Xbox One... no surround sound (no 5.1 DTS Dolby...)

I was certain is surround sound was an issue we would have seen it here already. I did a search and nothing came up.

I just loaded plex on xbox one (yes I am a plexpass user). I have been unable to get it to play surround yet the Roku has no issue playing the same movies with DTS Dolby or whatever. Am I missing a setting? Tests on the xbox show that surround is working for games.

Thanks in advance

DTS is not supported by the Xbox One and will need to be transcoded to AC3. Are you getting no sound or is it just coming out stereo?

The surround sound is working for me with both direct played files and transcoded files, so I can tell you it does work, but may have a setting that needs to be tweaked.

I have mine setup for HDMI out Bitstream with the format set to Dolby Digital.

I’ve read before that DTS isn’t supported on Xbox One, but to clarify, is that just referring to third-party apps? DTS is an option on the Xbox One. Either DTS Digital Surround or Dolby Digital can be selected in the audio\bitstream menu. Is Microsoft blocking Plex from using DTS?

DTS is not available outside of the bluray app. The bitstream out basically means that the xbox will mix the audio (your video, game, and system sounds and output as DTS). This will happen no matter what you pick as there is no passthough option on the xbox. I use the dolby digital bitstream option, the only downside of this is with 2 channel tv shows and such you only get 2 channels because the xbox will output the other channels as dead air.

Like jmckee, I will say my 5.1 system works just fine with audio coming from all speakers.

Yes, it is a 3rd party apps restriction. Microsoft has to approve and release all codecs to 3rd party apps which is why the DLNA player put out by Microsoft will get some codec/container support first.

The option for what it outputs is after the video player decodes to audio from the source. So what is happening you are sending DTS/AC3/MP3 to the Xbox One, the Xbox One decodes the audio using the approved/released codecs, and then transmits that decoded stream in the format you specified in the options to the device the Xbox One is plugged into.

Ah, got it…thanks for the clarification adamskoog and jmckee! So when the Xbox One decodes, it’s getting dropped down from DTS to something like Dolby Digital to produce surround sound? It still sounds good for surround sound tracks (for me at least), whatever the Xbox One is doing. I honestly don’t even think I’ve heard DTS-HD MA, so I don’t know what I’m missing between Dolby Digital and DTS-HD MA. Hopefully I’m not missing much as I’m done with discs…it’s all digital at this point, and no plans to buy yet another “player” device to get DTS.

So what is the best option for htmi. I read somewhere its best to have it just do 5.1 and not do the bitstream. If you are saying bitstream is better then is Dolby or DTS better.

Here is the article:

My reciever does both Dolby and DTS

It will depend on how your receiver handles it. Like one of the other users I was getting weird sounds when navigating the dashboard so I switched to bitstream. Audio during playback I don’t notice a difference either way, some people say they do.

Short answer, try them both out if you like one better in all situations use it. For the average user you shouldn’t be noticing a difference between the two. If you absolutely must have the closest to lossless audio you can, go with uncompressed.

I switched back to uncompressed to try it out again. It seems for some reason with uncompressed I lose the center channel on some files. (Which may have been why I switched to 5.1 bit stream in the first place)
