Migrating plex from synology to ubuntu 24.04

Server Version#: 1.42.

I wanted to migrate my plex server from my old synology to a new ubuntu. To get more performance. Followed the guide and now I am stuck with none. My new installation is not working because of no access ?? Local server is not shown of I have no access at all.. But even worse!! my old server is not starting either!! so notw I have nothing..

I would settle to just start over and import all my series and movies but even that is not popssible.. I can not connect the new server to my account..

So i am totally lost..

any one with tips/tricks ?

Which guide did you follow?

DSM 6 or 7?

How did you transfer the files?

How skilled are you at Linux / SSH ?

as my current plex is on DSM6 I followed that guide.

I tarred the Plex Media Server folderand copied it to my ubuntu machine where I untarred it.

My linux skills are pretty damn good

Well I got a step further…

I accessed the new installtion via fqdn. That worked (as far as displaying the webinterface) but could not do anything with it. Now accessing the new plex on IP based and I could enter the setup..

Turns out (from logging) the dns I was using was not recognized to be a local one. (bit strange as it is a local one)

So now I have my library setup and I guess I need to manualy set all my media as watched…

looking at my library (while it is still importing) it seems it gotten some flags of watch. maybe this is store in my account ?

  1. FQDNs are not accepted when claiming a server (PMS is overly secure)
You need the IP only as you found out

  2. I’m presuming you did the chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver

  3. Please don’t be so quick to create new server instances. I just cleaned up your previous attempt. We could have kept it.

I’m not understanding this.

Is the server importing your media now and loading metadata ?

Yes,

New server has imported my media.

But I noticed that maybe 40% was flagged as watched. I did not mind because I have watch around 98% of my library. but I was somewhat surprised to see the watched flag.

Still have a playback issue  but that may be network related..

Will continue tomorrow
