Migrating plex metadata - how to confirm it was successful?

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173
Player Version#: Any

Hi all, (this is a repost from my original post on the plex reddit forum)

I’m in the process of migrating both my data (from old Synology NAS to new Synology NAS) and my PMS (from old Synology NAS to Intel NUC).

I’ve copied data from old NAS to new NAS, installed Ubuntu on the NUC and installed PMS directly on there with no issues.

For the metadata migration, I’ve followed the instructions here:

First copied over the library folder: Moving PMS from Synology to Linux Ubuntu

Then editing the library paths: Moving your media and keeping the metadata - The TL;DR

I think I did everything correctly, but I’m not seeing the “2” showing up as described in step 3 of the second link. Any ideas why?

I haven’t deleted the old path yet so I still have the old and new paths for each library. I don’t know if anything in the instructions have changed since it was written in 2019 - is there any way to confirm that my metadata was successfully migrated over and it’s safe to delete the old path?

If you’re not seeing the “2” show up, I’m concerned.

can you make / get the logs ZIP file for me please?

I can see the new server running and has updated the name on Plex.tv

Thank you. I followed steps here to download logs, let me know if something else is needed as well: Plex Media Server Logs | Plex Support

There is one thing you can do.

Turn DEBUG logging back on please and keep it on?

I can’t see what happened. DEBUG logging is the default. Logs are fixed length so nothing is saved by turning DEBUG off. VERBOSE is the only thing we keep off unless absolutely needed.

After you enable DEBUG logging (SAVE the change),
add another location.

maybe it will start showing up what’s happening.

I’ve actually updated all the existing libraries to add the new path. Should I first remove the new paths, enabled debugging, and then try adding the new path to one library first?

Enable Debug logging and continue forward with what you’re doing.

We will keep an eye on it.

The important thing to note is that the scanner runs (upper right corner Activity) and you can see it scanning the new location(s)

Ok. I’ve just enabled debug logging though I haven’t made any other changes (added or removed paths). I see it scanning, but if I click on the activity, it’s just detecting intros.

Edit: and just to add, I added the paths and it began scanning last night, about 12+ hours ago.

If you want intro detection, let it run.
If you don’t, you can go edit the library section(s) and disable it.

It does sound like it’s going along ok.

For the purpose of expedience, you might want to consider disabling intros for now and re-enabling after everything is rehosted.

Ok, I’ve just changed “generate intro video markers” to “never” for now. It’s still showing “detecting intros”. Is there any where I can go to manually stop the process? Or will it just stop eventually by itself?

Easiest way is to

  1. restart the server
  2. Go back to the library you last edited manually “Scan Files” to restart it.

Ok, i’ve just restarted the NUC and chose to scan files again. I tried just scanning 1 folder but it completed instantly so I’m just scanning all and will let it run for a bit. I need to step away for a couple of hours but will update with status once I’m back, thank you.

I’m back now and I see that it’s no longer scanning, but I don’t see “2” listed in my libraries. Perhaps I’m looking in the wrong place?

Edit: one more thing - my old plex server (on the old NAS) is still up and running and accessible - do I need to stop that? Could it be a reason why this is happening?

Also uploading logs again. Tried to run a library scan one more time before download logs but doesn’t look like anything happens (activity icon in upper right doesn’t spin)

@njmplex

Would you please turn DEBUG logging on again? (SAVE after enabling)
I can’t see anything to help without it.

Turning DEBUG off does not save space. Logs are fixed length/size.

This could be one of several issues but I can’t tell.

It’s probably the codecs but I need to see that

I could have sworn I’d turned it on…

I’m at the office unfortunately but I’ll check again when I get home this evening.

Once I turn it on, do I need to upload logs here again?

If you can

  1. Restart Plex
  2. Let it get started / settled
  3. Attempt to play / do things with it (give it a workout)
  4. Let it settle
  5. Download the logs ZIP again
  6. Attach.

We’ll see if any errors pop up

I just got home and check - it looks like I enabled already (screenshots below) but let me know if I’m missing something.

I’ll restart the server again and follow your steps above.

Is it ok that I have both servers up and accessible (old Plex on NAS and new Plex on NUC)?

You’re showing web logging

We need Server logging.
Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced – DEBUG (check the box) – SAVE

Isn’t that the 2nd screenshot? (enable Plex Media Server debug logging)

That was also already checked and saved yesterday. I’ve gone ahead and restarted the NUC (actually also stopped the Plex service on the old NAS as well), waited a bit, played part of a video, and stopped it, attaching logs now.

Plex Media Server Logs_2021-11-09_18-36-27.zip (7.2 MB)

Just wondering - what would happen if I removed the old path from the libraries on the new server now?

I’ve turned off the old plex server and when I access my Plex account via the app on my smartphone it sees the new server and files on the new NAS. I think it’s accurately representing most of the file information and history (though some videos are not matched or showing as “newly added” even though they were copied along with all the other data from old nas to new nas)
