Minor cosmetic suggestion for PlexAmp

I think I’m going to be jumping on the “one star/no star” system introduced in PlexAmp.

That, combined with the new “fresh” and “loved” auto playlists will be a very nice and relaxing experience I think.

So, just one suggestion: In the player UI, make the star a heart instead. Why? Well it would match better with the playlists which contains a heart. It would also take away more of the feeling that you are putting a rating on the track - it would feel more like you “like” this.

Hi again @d2freak, and welcome aboard the one star/no star train (the correct train, btw).

I actually really like this idea, and have passed it on to the team to hear their thoughts!

And just out of personal interest, why do you prefer the simpler ratings?

I totally agree.

I like to use the 5-star system for rating my albums (I even use half stars), and then I just “star/heart/like/pick” my favourite songs in those albums. Works fine for me, and this way I can easily play my favourite tracks from my favourite albums with a smart playlist.

Thanks for bringing it forward!

Another argument for this idea:
Currently, if you mark a track as “dislike” it will have a crossed out rating star. This is slightly confusing, as it could be taken to mean “unrated” etc. A heart would be much more clear as to it’s meaning.

Edit: The one star also looks a bit confusing in the tracks view on an album. It kind of looks like you have rated a bunch of tracks as “1 star” which makes it look like you dislike them.

Why I prefer it? Well, for me it’s about simplifying things. I have a large mucic library (150k tracks) and I have been very specific about rating tracks. I have had smart playlists both for 3, 4 and 5 stars tracks. But, recently I’ve been more and more finding this a bit redundant. Then came PlexAmp, which has made music exploration much better and fun again. I quickly found that being so specific about the tracks both are unnecessary, and quite frankly a bit exhausting. I explore a lot. So yeah, the switch feels good to me. Simpler. Faster. More relaxing.

How about yourself? I wonder too out of interest.

Similar to you  I find the mental overhead of deciding exactly where to put something on a scale of 1-10 (remembering half stars are also a thing)… too much like hard work. I usually find I like something, I don’t like something, or I’m ambivalent.

I mostly use ratings to provide “hints” to Plex’s radios for improved play queues, and for coming back to via a  Tracks smart playlist. Anything more than like/dislike/neutral for those use cases is redundant, in my opinion.

Single star ratings are quicker, simpler, and less exhausting.
