I think this was the way it used to work. I have my view set up to where I can see the star rating of a song as it plays. For a song without a rating yet, I can see the 5 empty stars, but if I click on them, it just opens a pop up with some options, including the rating. It would be awesome not to have to go into a pop up to set the rating. This is Plexamp version 3.4.0 on MacOS 10.15.7
First screen shot shows my standard view. Second shows what happens if I click on any of the stars from the normal view. In that second screen shot, I am able to set the rating, but it really feels like an unnecessary click to get there.
I’m not sure what you mean by like and dislike system? Where can I find that? Does it give me the same granularity or is it just binary? I have playlists based on star rating that are automatically built and would not like to lose those.
You can find it in the settings -> appearance -> prefer full ratings (turn this off).
It will not give you the same granularity. What happens is this: The 5 stars you currently see will turn to one star, and if you click it, the song will be rated 5 stars. Click it again and it will get crossed out and that will rate the song 1 star. Click it again and it will get unrated.
It’s like a like/dislike system in the sense that a 1-starred song will not be included in radios. And the 5 stars one will be preferred in some radios.
This is only a different cosmetic way of rating a track. I find it more relaxing to use. But your playlists will function the same way they always do. Also PlexAmp shows a “clicked star” if the previous rating is 3 or up.
Ah ok I just tried that out (thanks for pointing it out, I hadn’t seen it before). That won’t work for me. My playlists work as they were, but when I say add a 5 star rating to a song, it gets added to a playlist automatically. So using this binary rating will not give me the granularity I need to have that automated addition happen going forward.
back in the 1.x series, yeah. we changed it because it was tricky to get it to work under a fat finger, and it didn’t seem too terrible to bring it into the other menu (one extra tap/click).
if you really must have instant rating, consider setting global keyboard shortcuts,
That’s disappointing to hear, but at least it was a conscious decision. I’ve tried the global shortcuts and they don’t allow for half star ratings, so it won’t really work for me. I’ll just have to keep clicking, thanks for the info.
Really seems like a bug, since on the desktop version the cursor changes to a Pointer to allow fine selection of the stars (yet still slides up the menu, making it 3 steps).
If the issue is “fat fingers” on mobile, perhaps the “5-star” toggle could enlarge the size of the stars - and/or move it slightly down.
This is really a non-feature as-is, please consider reverting to the previous setup with direct inline rating for 5 stars.
It’s terrible. Please revert it so that those who rate most songs have 1 press instead of 3. Everyone else already has it this way… Have you used the feature or is your app set to star/hate?
because the UI indicates (finger) that it should be possible to directly rate (bad UI).
because it takes 3 clicks to rate, which all other mini-players only need 1 (bad UX).
because the text in settings tells me to “re-consider my life choices” (dismissive).
because it used to work correctly and then changed “fat fingers” (lazy).
because it it uses 3 vertical positions to do the action (demands attention).
I rate music while doing other activities and prefer to not dedicate my full attention to the app. Because the slide up dialog has the star rating in a different vertical location than the stars on the player view, I must redirect my full attention to the app – and click not just three times, but three different positions. This is more confirmation than a banking app!
Because I cant just mindlessly rate, it makes the other thing I’m doing dangerous (in app) while driving or walking, or cleaning or playing a game and frustrating (on desktop) while working on another task to have to focus on the rating activity.
Why not simply put the larger stars from the slide up dialog on the main player view?
