I have the 1- star system selected in the settings and that’s how it shows up in “Now Playing” view. However when I’m selecting a song to rate that’s not currently playing, e.g. in an album view, it defaults to giving me the option to choose out of 5 stars. That’s through the 3 dot menu on the right. Is this a bug or intended feature? 5 stars do still result in 1 star on the “Now Playing” view.
You dont see the point but I have seen many audiophiles and the alike fume over not having the star system. It creates many levels of customization when they apply this to their filters in Plex, that they can’t get with say other music streaming platforms. It’s a matter of mind over matter with your head stuck on the whole heart for favoring due to those streaming services making it simple for their users.
When you really do have a huge music library, star systems become very important when making smart playlists and other arrangements with filtering, especially the use of half stars.
Yes I get that, but if I have a 1-star system selected as my preferred system of rating, why do I need to select out of 5 stars to get a binary output. That’s why it seems like a bug and not a feature
Well, let’s say you are in album view but also realize maybe you come across a whole album by an artist that’s NOT so great. You might only want to 5 star/heart only two tracks on the entire album. Well, you then can also give 1 star aka literally ONE star so when you shuffle or do a radio play, those actual ONE stars on the album won’t actually play at all, equal to a thumbs down .
In most other players, like pandora, Spotify, and such they use Icons… those are way too simplistic for users for Plex and PlexAmp.
Again, the reason for the 5 star system is to give YOU more options to decide to further break down what you individually want for each track and album.
You like an entire album, just mark it ALL 5 stars.
Let’s say Plex did give you exactly what you wanted and gave you a 1 star equal to 5 star for the whole interface. I bet you might have to turn that off when you came across songs or albums that were more 2 or 3 stars. You might just reflect on your decision and eventually realize it was a mistake. Just putting it out there.
The star ratings also are consistent with the ratings for movies and tv show libraries so it’s just not tied specifically to the music library.
I would say the reason for the 1 star equal 5 star mechanism is to make sure PlexAmp users can instantly mark a track as a 5 star favorite super fast and easy, for situations like driving or riding a bike, or doing something that would otherwise require their full attention. It’s a save a life measure, at least how I see it.
I must say I don’t consider myself an audiophile (the term bugs me and I try hard not to become an audiofool) but I take my music seriously and I devote considerable time to listening. This said, I am also using a one star system. It provides me three options -like/unlike/neutral states.- I believe the choice of one, three or five stars is more of a personal choice, not an audiophile one. I personally think I am not consistent enough to keep reliable 5-star ratings. My mood changes would ruin my objectivity throughout the weeks/months/years.
In fact, I’d rather see an option to rate albums, not songs; but I see the difficulty in that. This is why I hardly use the rating system; since I mainly listen to albums as a whole, not singular songs.
@ozzfranta I once thought I was rating albums when I saw the 5-star rating option you mention. Since I use a 1-star rating system and that is for songs, this 5-star must be a different rating, surely for albums, I thought. I was starstruck, it seems
I think this conversation may have spiraled out of control a bit, but we were discussing internally, and have made a change to how it showed on the menu if you have the 1-star setting enabled.
