Mis-rendered VOBSUBs. An issue since 2017

Server Version#: Version 1.21.0.3616
Player Version#: Plex for Android 8.9.2

This is an issue identified and confirmed by @anon18523487 (Nvidia Shield TV: Mis-rendered VOBSUBs (MKV, MPEG2) - #7 by anon18523487) , but never fixed, and found here: Nvidia Shield TV: Mis-rendered VOBSUBs (MKV, MPEG2)

The two samples provided back then still have the problem today:

and

Here are the links to the sample files, from the point of the error, mentioned in those two posts:
Les Troyens

In the Opera ‘Les Troyens’, at the line ‘ the pure air of the fields ’ the MKV with VOBSUBS is blurred or rendered incorrectly:

There is NO mis-rendering present in either VLC or IOS using MPV:

The Damnation of Faust

There are no ‘lines’ or mis-rendering in VLC nor iOS using MPV:

@FlashMasta also had the same issues.

As a side note, the MPV plater used on iOS devices and the Apple TV, do not have this issue. This is purely an exoplayer issue. In my case, I use an Nvidia Shield TV.

This was working at one point with the 6.13.7 release and then was broken again from 6.14 on. I still find it hard to believe that they cannot look at the code base changes from 6.13.7 to 6.14 and figure out what they broke.

I’ve never seen it work. You are probably going to have to upload samples to this forum for them to check.

I have done that multiple times over the past couple of years. They have 100% verified the bug already but no clue on when they will fix it.

The misrendering was the only issue left for VOBSUBS on exoplayer. The Nvidia Shield has been perfect otherwise.

I’m wondering if this could get some attention, please.

@anon18523487 can you provide any update on this? It’s now the only remaining visual issue with VOBSUBs on platforms using exoplayer (the shield, in my case).

This is happening on a reasonably new release of Babylon Berlin; I can provide sample files and screenshots of that too, if required.

Sorry, I don’t have an update. It’s still listed as an open issue and waiting for the devs to get to it.

How long has it been open with Plex? Since I reported it in 2017?

The last update from you said devs couldn’t figure out the cause, not that they haven’t got to it yet.

Has it been that long. I don’t remember. I know there were some other issues that you identified that were fixed before. This specific one was looked at but they couldn’t find a cause at the time, and they haven’t had time to spend more time to investigate. Hopefully in the new year I can push them to take a look again.

Thanks. Yes, subtitles used to disappear and cause the android app to crash. That all got fixed. It’s just the rendering issue that remains. You have the samples from me and those from @FlashMasta but if you need anything else, then I’m happy to help.

Hi @anon18523487 here is a modern manufactured DVD with the same issue: ‘Babylon Berlin’ s3e2. The sample file is the exact place the issue occurs.

Sample file is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_KcKY5yZyrKV31k_aoX6PaH5dyRVq2jZ/view?usp=sharing

There are two examples of misrender taken on the Nvidia Shield TV (you’ll notice there is a line through the top of the text):

And here are those same subtitles using plex on iOS (MPV player):

Thanks. That does look like the same issue you had reported.

Here are a few more. I think it can be considered a confirmed bug now. Pops up all over the place: a line going through or on top of the text.

@anon18523487 the worst (or best) example example I have seen so far.
