Misrendered subtitles

I was watching Cabin In The Woods the other day. Plex kept reporting generic playback errors every time I tried to start the movie.

I enabled force direct play.

Bizarre. I don’t have to do that with 99% of other movies.

The movie began playing. But every time a word like “it’s” would display in subtitles, the apostrophe would render as a diamond question mark.

I know from Kindle ebook sideloading that smart quotes often trip up outdated software. So when I prepare books, I convert all smart quotes to their ASCII equivalent character.

Can we please offer the same for Plex subtitle tracks? Because direct play on LG WebOS does not handle them well. And direct play is sometimes the only way to handle media.

Are you using external SRT subtitles? If so, they should be encoded to UTF-8, per Plex’s docs. It’s to avoid issues just like this.

Here are the supporting docs:

MKV subtitle tracks, in this case.

Probably SRT format embedded tracks.
