Missing menu items

Hey - I’m completely new at Plex so apologies in advance if this has been covered elsewhere - but I’ve searched through the forum and google but haven’t found an answer, so please kindly point me in the right direction.

I just paid for a lifetime Plex Pass, installed Plex on my macbook pro, and am running the Plex Media Server through the web app. After installation, I got my existing files to show, but I don’t have a Channels menu item to watch Plex TV, and when I try to set up LiveTV on my apple TV, there’s no menu feature available to do a scan.

Where can I add these (considering that’s what I’m paying for)? I read through the instructions for adding a channel plugin but of course, I get stuck at the first instruction: Open Plex Web App and choose Channel in the sidebar… there is no Channel option.

Did I set things up incorrectly?

Thanks!

Plex is not a content provider like Netflix, Google. One of the features of the Plex Media Server is it can be a software DVR that connects to a digital tuner and can stream the live tv signal from that tuner. https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877427-supported-dvr-tuners-and-antennas/ We don’t provide the tuner.

After you set up the tuner and LiveTV DVR the options menu options will be there. ( channel plugins are not the same thing) https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877347-live-tv-dvr/

Thanks for the response @BigWheel. My TV has a digital tuner, and I thought I could use AppleTV should as a digital tuner as well.

I set up Plex on Opera on my tv so that I could scan for tv content, but I don’t have that option. My only option is to use the PMS Web App to “find my tuner” but since it’s not connected to my tv, it can’t find anything.

Even if Plex is not like Netflix and Google, if I have the unlimited Premium account, and I have a tv connected to wifi, with a digital tuner, and I have the app installed on AppleTV, do I still need to pay for add a hardware dvr tuner/antenna?

Do I need to move my server from my laptop to say, an external drive connected to AppleTV or connected directly to my TV? If this is the case, how do I request my money back?

I’m not sure what I’m paying for with my subscription if the only thing I can do is stream the content I own - which I can do for free, without a server, over Airplay…

Thanks!

Thanks @grhiner. I’ve been going through the live-tv-dvr link you shared, but I still can’t watch tv/get my computer to see the tv that’s on the same network and has a digital tuner.

I may need to buy additional hardware, but if that’s the case, my Plex account is redundant since I can watch tv without it, and I can stream content I already own over Airplay…

You need a supported digital tuner the Plex Media Server can see and get the stream from. The link to supported ones is in the link in my previous post

You don’t need a subscription to play your local content with Plex either. LiveTV/DVR EPG data has a cost that is why it is part of the susbcription
