When searching for a match, the main “Tenchi Muyo! (1992)” series appears, as seen here:
On IMDB, the episodes that comprise Tenchi Universe are listed under Season 2 of Tenchi Muyo (1992). But these episodes are not listed in either TVDB or TMDB under Tenchi Muyo (1992), as they are categorized as a separate series. Which results in the Plex TV agent not being able to match these episodes.
Categorizing Tenchi Universe as a separate series seems appropriate, given it follows a different timeline from the main series and is billed as an “alternate version”.
Plex does not use IMDb as a source as far as I know. TMDB and TVDB have both series on there just as different shows. So they aren’t missing, just ordered differently from how IMDb has it. You would just have to make sure that you match the files names and folders to the structure on TMDB or TVDB.
Something like
Tenchi Muyo! (1992)/Season XX/SXXEXX - Episode Name
and
Tenchi Universe (1995)/Season XX/SXXEXX - Episode Name
I’ve tried both of those naming schemes, the issue is that the Plex TV agent won’t match it.
No results are returned when I attempt to fix match and search for “Tenchi Universe”.
When I search for Tenchi Muyo/Tenchi Muyou, I just get the main 1992 series.
Problem is, under the main 1992 series on both TMDB and TVDB, the episodes that make up Tenchi Universe aren’t listed under any season. The only place that does organize things like that is IMDB.
Is this not the season you are looking for? I’m confused as to what you are trying to say. The databases that Plex uses, TMDB and TVDB both show Tenchi Universe as a show with a single season featuring 26 episodes. Maybe try adding the TMDB id 20451 or the TVDB id 79620 to the show folder. Barring that maybe try switching to the old agent
Yes, that’s the season I’m looking for. If I click on Fix Match and search for Tenchi Universe, no results are found. Same thing when searching by the TMDB or TVDB IDs - no results found.
I tried adding the {tmdb-20451} {tvdb-79620} hints to the series folder name, but Plex keeps picking it up as Tenchi Muyo! (1992) - TMDB ID 43004.
The issue is with trying to use IMDB as the source for matching. You have to use TVDB.
The series have entirely different names. Namely, Tenchi Universe is “Tenchi Muyo! Tenchi Universe” and Tenchi Muyo! is named “Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki”
I have all of Tenchi properly matched in my collection, so it does work and is not missing. I am not using custom metadata agents nor did I select an alternate default agent.
If you’re concerned about the naming, you’ll need to take that up with TVDB (or force the titles yourself by editing the entries directly in Plex); you can argue 'til you’re blue in the face, but TVDB is the end-all authority (unless you use a different metadata agent entirely) and they typically take a very hard line on what and how they do things - for better or worse. Your file names MUST fit both the Plex and TVDB naming/numbering conventions.
I’ve done nothing special - one directory is named “Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki” and the other is “Tenchi Universe”. I don’t even have seasonal folders, which I’ll probably go back and correct at this point now that I noticed.
The file names are similarly plain “Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki - S01E01.mkv” and “Tenchi Muyo! Tenchi Universe S01E01.mkv”
No years, no ID’s involved, just using the specific name for each series based on the TVDB entries.
