Using the default Plex TV metadata provider, episodes 1 & 2 from the series Untold (2021) show as “Part 1” and “Part 2” respectively.
While the episode names are correct on TVDB [link], they are not correct on TMDB [link].

TVDB has multiple listings for “The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist.”
Individual Mini-Series: Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist
Part of Untold (2021) TV Show (as Season 2, Episodes 1 & 2).
The TVDB individual mini-series aligns with the TMDB listing you referenced (Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist (2022)).
I did not see a TMDB listing for Untold (2021).
If you want it listed as a separate show, use the TVDB mini-series or TMDB listings.
If you want it listed as part of the Untold (2021) series, use that listing from TVDB.
Given the multiple listings on TVDB, you may need to include the TVDB or TMDB ID in the show folder name. See Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files.
Some additional info on Netflix’s Untold series.
Wikipedia list of films: Untold (Netflix) - Wikipedia
TVDB carries them as a TV series: Untold (2021) - TheTVDB.com. They may also have individual listings such as the one for The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist.
TMDB carries them as individual movies (single part) or tv shows (multi-part).
The series is picked up correctly and matched to the TVDB Untold (2021) series [not the individual mini-series].
Even though the series is picked up correctly, I tried adding the TVDB ID to the folder name [ie. Untold (2021) {tvdb-407414}], refreshed metadata, and it’s still showing the mini-series title. Do I need to do the metadata dance to get Plex to fetch information specifically from TVDB?
Though, it’s odd that Plex recognizes the TVDB series, yet uses the TMDB mini-series title. I’m wondering if the Plex Series agent is doing something strange and somehow mashes up the two entries.
Any solution needs to be included in the filesystem and not metadata. In the rare case I need to rebuild my library, it’s not possible for me to keep track of one-off metadata edits.
The TMDB/TVDB/IMDB IDs tell Plex which movie/show to match.
The TMDB/TVDB/IMDB IDs do not specify a metadata source. Plex pulls metadata from those sources and holds it on their own servers. Your server pulls metadata from the Plex servers, not directly from TMDB/TVDB/IMDB.
Re: Untold
watch.plex.tv has Untold as a series (https://watch.plex.tv/show/untold-2021), with incorrect titles for s02e01 & e02.
It looks like Plex needs some clean-up on their metadata system. This happens when TMDB and TVDB carry things differently.
I’ll drop a note to Plex asking them to fix the titles for s02e01 and e02. It may take a few days for everything to refresh. I’ll update the thread when I hear back.
EDIT: The listings on TVDB had some incorrect references to TMDB & IMDB. I removed them from both the series and mini-series listings (unless a listing is locked, anyone can edit it). That should help clean up things as well.
Awesome. Thanks @FordGuy61 .
In the future, is this the correct forum for posting metadata inaccuracies? Or, is there a better forum for these types of issues?
This is the place. The metadata category & tag (either one) will get the right eyes on the problem.
@FordGuy61 I just refreshed the metadata for the Untold series and it’s still showing incorrect titles [just Part 1 and Part 2]
A couple things I notice when looking at the XML info for S02E02
<Guid id="imdb://tt21806932"/>
<Guid id="tmdb://3894374"/>
<Guid id="tvdb://9308773"/>

I don’t have the option “Use original titles” enabled on the library because otherwise foreign shows won’t display their English translation [eg. 오징어 게임 instead of Squid Game].
Thanks for pinging me.
I heard back from Plex’s metadata team.
The listings are all messed up between TMDB and IMDB. Someone linked the wrong entries together. Also, the entries at TMDB are locked, so they can only be changed by the TMDB people.
Plex has a case open with TMDB to straighten things out. They’ve yet to hear back from them.
Can you manually edit the two episode names in Plex for now?
Then, once TMDB straightens things out, Plex will pick up the correct listings.
Thank you so much for the quick response @FordGuy61 .
I’ll wait for a couple weeks and see if anything has changed.
I definitely can make local changes, but I’d prefer not to. My ideal scenario is to be able to re-create my Plex experience at any point without manual edits. I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, let alone custom edits I’ve made to Plex content. ![]()
What would be very helpful would be if Plex could ingest custom metadata from a file. But, I understand that’s likely a large change with lots of edge cases and a maintenance nightmare; and very few people would actually use it [ie. the ROI would be poor].
I’ll add that for some reason, if you refresh metadata, the show pulls the description and actors and poster from the Manti Te’o episodes:
This corresponds to https://watch.plex.tv/show/untold-2021
I miss the TVDB agent being the default ![]()
