Noticed this in particular with older films. Everything matches, but there’s no poster for the movie. I just recently encountered this with the Marilyn Monroe film Some Like it Hot from 1959. On Plex’s system (for rental) there’s no poster, either. Imgur: The magic of the Internet
What’s going on, and how do I fix this as an end-user? When we were using theTVDB, I could just go ensure there was artwork and submit my own if it was missing. Now, what are my courses of action? I’d prefer to not have to manually manage artwork…
Well, that’s frustrating. What you are suggesting is not a good solution and does not scale well. Are there plans to allow connecting to other sources of posters if Plex isn’t going to be a reliable source? Like ThePosterDB?
You do realize that when the owners of those posters issue DMCA takedown orders, it impacts EVERYONE. This does include ThePosterDB, TMDB, and TheTVDB.
Plex is one of the first impacted because of where we get our metadata from
(one of the largest providers). When the takedown was delivered to them, it was immediately passed forward to us which we must also comply with.
It stinks but that’s how it works
I don’t understand “What you are suggesting is not a good solution and does not scale well.”.
Do you have that many older items you can’t manually go grab the posters and curate the media one last time by hand?
OTHER OPTION:
Can you give me a few examples where you don’t have posters ?
Regarding DMCA: I understand that official posters might be removed, however you don’t know for sure that they are getting the same notices as you - or even that they’ll listen, maybe they won’t. However, other sites like ThePosterDB also include fan-created posters and those are likely not going to be subject to a DMCA takedown. I’d rather have a fan poster than no poster.
It’s not a good solution and doesn’t scale well because it requires me to keep an eye on every movie added and see if it is properly matched and gets a poster. I didn’t use to have to do that, I would prefer for items to be automated. Also, I sometimes have different versions of videos on different drives. I don’t want to have to manually add posters for movies, I want it to just work.
Other movies I’ve encountered this issue recently include Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) and Klute (1971).
ETA: one other reason I’d like to be able to use other poster systems as a data source for posters is so that when I go to choose another poster in Plex I’m presented with those as options instead of needing to go find a poster and manually add it.
