I installed my cable tuner last night and went through the guide refresh, when the refresh was complete i started looking for all my shows that my family normal watches. a big one for my kids is How its made on the science Chanel i literally have hundreds of these shows recorded on my old DVR but when i look through plexes guide i see no showings. I check my cable providers TV guide and there are several showings for this weekend. is there a reason that these would not be displayed in the guide
Are you referring to free Over-the-Air HDTV or a cable company? The Science Channel sounds like cable channel which you pay for and there for is most likely encrypted. PLEX’s DVR functionality only works with non-encrypted channels (mostly Over-the-Air HDTV).
it is cable yes, I have recorded several shows using the HDHomeRun Prime that allows for the DVR’ing of cable channels using the cable providers cable card
Oh ok, sorry. You didn’t mention you were using HDHomeRun in your post above. I was under the assumption you were using a USB or PCI(e) card tuner.
When you mention these shows being recorded in the past, that was with the DVR (HDHomeRun ) independent of PLEX right (no integration with PLEX)?
they were recorded in the past using Microsoft media center with a ceton infinitv with no issues. im sure id be able to record them with my current plex setup if they would just show in the guide but they dont. i checked with the cable companies channel line up and verified that they are airing it still there are several showing this past weekend in fact and I had well over 200 recorded on my media center pc. this is truly one of my children’s fav shows and the really enjoy watching it.
Per PLEX’s page (https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/225877427-Supported-DVR-Devices-and-Antennas) it states the following: “If you do have cable service, though, you can still make use of a DVR that supports cable to let you view unencrypted content!” I’m thinking even though you have the card in your HDHomeRun that can decrypt the channel to watch on your HDHomeRun, I think PLEX wont DVR because its an encrypted channel none the less (and why it doesn’t show up in the guide). Do other channels that are encrypted and show up in the guide work?
